Wailea Beach Resort - Marriott, Maui
3700 Wailea Alanui Drive

After a top-to-bottom $100 million renovation in 2016, the four-pearl Wailea Beach Resort - Marriott, Maui feels like a new property. The hotel’s 547 guest rooms are housed in low-rise buildings spread across the well manicured property. They’re decorated with sleek furnishings and are stocked with nice amenities like Nespresso machines and flat-screen TVs. Four pools and a water park cater to all kinds of travelers, and varied dining options keep the food scene interesting. Additional amenities include a spa, fitness center, family game room, and a small movie theater, but the biggest disappointment is the resort’s indirect access to Wailea Beach. Though it’s an oceanfront property, there is, ironically, no beach in front of the Wailea Beach Resort. Guests must walk to the nearby Grand Wailea in order to access the sand. Travelers looking for a truly beachfront property may prefer Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club, though it isn’t as upscale.

Fairmont Kea Lani, Maui
4100 Wailea Alanui Dr

Wailea's aptly named Fairmont Kea Lani is a "white heaven" indeed -- its 450 units sit on a 22-acre beachfront property that includes three outdoor pools -- one with a waterslide and another adults-only -- multiple  restaurants and bars, a luxurious spa, and access to world-class golf. Unlike its competitors, this property does an excellent job of keeping both couples and families happy without the long lines and battles for sun loungers by the pool. Oceanfront villas and suites are some of the largest in Maui, and all are equipped with flat-screen TVs, living spaces, marble bathrooms with separate tubs and showers, and furnished outdoor spaces. A 24-hour fitness center, daily activities, and wedding services round out features. A pricey daily resort fee (typical for Hawaii) covers self-parking, Wi-Fi, and snorkeling gear. Young couples may prefer the Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort, a trendy property with cascading pools.

Ho'olei at Grand Wailea
146 Hoolei Cir

The Ho’olei at Grand Wailea offers luxury condos on a beautiful, relaxed property connected to the Grand Wailea, one of Maui’s most impressive mega-resorts. In huge villas that average 3,500 square feet, families will find all the comforts of a luxury home, including a decked-out kitchen, walk-in closets, a spacious lanai, a garage, and an elevator. While the property has its own lovely pool and fitness room, guests can access the main resort’s elaborate maze of pools and waterslides, enormous fitness center, and other activities. It’s perfect for visitors who want all the features of the Grand Wailea, but with a more peaceful atmosphere and more spacious accommodations.

Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea
3900 Wailea Alanui Drive

Situated on beautiful Wailea Beach, the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea established itself as one of Hawaii’s premier luxury resorts when it opened in 1990. Today, after a multi-million-dollar renovation in 2016, the 383-room oceanfront stunner still maintains its elite status and doesn't charge a resort fee (a rarity for Hawaii). Modern guest rooms are spacious and sumptuously outfitted with bathtubs, separate showers, and luxe amenities. Three restaurants provide varied dining options, and Wolfgang Puck’s acclaimed Spago is one of Maui’s best eateries. Families and couples are equally catered to here with two family-friendly pools, a game room, free kids' club, secluded adults-only oasis pool, and a world-class spa. However, some couples or solo travelers may find the hotel to be a bit too family-friendly. Travelers looking for a more hip, adults-centric property may prefer the Andaz Maui at Wailea Hotel.

Wailea Ekahi Village
3300 Wailea Alanui Dr, Check in address 34 Wailea Gateway Place, Suite A102

This massive 294-unit condo resort is spread out over a nicely maintained 34-acre tropical property alongside a lovely beach in Wailea. While part of the property extends down to the ocean, most of the condos are set back a bit inland, and it can be a 10-minute walk to reach the beach from the farthest units. These level of updating in these mid-range condos varies from unit to unit, and though they are smaller and a bit older than those at neighboring Elua Village, they're also at a slightly lower price point. All in all, they're a good value for this upscale neighborhood.

Wailea Elua Village
3600 Wailea Alanui Dr, Check in at 34 Wailea Gateway Place, Suite A102

This 152-unit upper-middle-range condo resort’s best feature is its prime location along lovely Ulua Beach, a family-friendly beach that offers some of the best snorkeling in Maui. However as buildings are spread across a 24-acre property, some units are far from the oceanfront. The contemporary condos are generally modern, though some units are still due for a refresh. Two nice pools and a hot tub round out the amenities at this low-key property that is serious about its quiet hours. Units are nicer than those at the larger Wailea Ekahi Village.

Hotel Wailea
555 Kaukahi Street

Hotel Wailea was once a budget hotel in upscale Wailea, but a complete renovation in 2014 turned this property into a luxury stunner with all the trimmings of a stylish boutique hotel. Each of the rooms are one-bedroom suites with private outdoor spaces; some have distant ocean views. Guests can dine al fresco at The Restaurant at Hotel Wailea, which has a chef's table and uses organic ingredients, or The Cabanas, a poolside bar. Kids under the age of 16 aren't allowed here, making for a peaceful and romantic property that appeals to honeymooners. One caveat -- Hotel Wailea isn't directly on the beach but a Mercedes-Benz limo brings guests to a nearby beach club with free chairs and bottled water. The nearby Four Seasons Maui is a good bet for families with kids.

Makena Surf
4850 Makena Alanui, Check in at 34 Wailea Gateway Place

This 105-unit upscale condo resort is one of the few properties in Makena, a small neighborhood just south of the big resorts and busy beaches of Wailea. It’s a great option for families looking for peace and quiet and a place that’s away from the crowds. The contemporary open-plan condos have big sliding doors that open onto comfortable lanais. All units have lovely ocean views, and the oceanfront units are just steps from the water, where sea turtles are often spotted. There aren’t any restaurants in walking distance, but plenty of options can be found within a 10-minute drive.

Wailea Grand Champions Villas
155 Wailea Ike Pl, Check in at 34 Wailea Gateway Place, Suite A102

There aren’t many three-pearl lodging options in ritzy Wailea, but Wailea Grand Champions Villas offers solid value with its 107 one-, two-, and three-bedroom condo units. The quiet property is located in the middle of the Wailea Blue Golf Course and within walking distance of local shops and restaurants, though it's a hilly 20-minute walk from the beach. There are two outdoor pools with adjacent grilling areas, but no other amenities like a fitness center, restaurant, spa, or daily housekeeping. Travelers looking for apartment-style units with resort amenities might prefer Honua Kai Resort & Spa, though it’s pricier and located on the opposite end of Maui on North Kaanapali Beach.

Polo Beach Club
4400 Makena Rd

The Polo Beach Club is an eight-story, oceanfront condominium resort located directly on a secluded beach in the Wailea/Makena area. The quiet location makes it ideal for families and couples looking for an affordable Hawaiian vacation. The condo units are spacious and all come with fully equipped kitchens offering microwaves, refrigerators, and coffeemakers. Units are individually owned, so they differ in size and decor. As such, it's a good idea to look at the floor plans on the hotel website before deciding which unit to book. The property features an outdoor pool and hot tub, as well as easy beach access. However, some guests have complained that the beach is small and can seem too crowded at times. The property offers thoughtful amenities, such as in-room massages, chefs, and pre-stock grocery services (all for a fee). The outdoor grill station and herb garden is an enticing option for guests to cook a relaxing dinner on their own.
