At the northern end of the Virginia Beach boardwalk, the oceanside Holiday Inn & Suites North Beach is a mid-range hotel with resort-style amenities. There are three pools, three restaurants, and a kids' club, making it a popular choice with family vacationers. Rooms are colorful and have a nautical theme; suites come outfitted with kitchenettes. It's a great place for kids, but adults looking for something a bit quieter might want to consider the nearby Comfort Inn & Suites Oceanfront as a slightly more grown-up alternative.
Scene
Family-oriented hotel with a colorful lobby and lots for children
The Holiday Inn & Suites North Beach is very much a family hotel, with lots of on-site amenities for children (as well as plenty for business travelers). This rust-hued hotel sits at the end of the boardwalk in the northern part of the main strip, and it can get crowded with children at times. The lobby has colorful carpeting and seating, low ceilings, and little decorative touches, such as a large model sailboat. There's also a flat-screen TV and a small shop selling snacks.
Location
On the northern end of Virginia Beach, where the boardwalk ends
Like most hotels in Virginia Beach, the Holiday Inn is on the water. It's surrounded by other hotels and parking lots, but as it's on the north end of the strip where the boardwalk ends, the surroundings don't feel as busy as some of the more central spots. It's a 10-minute drive to the lighthouse at Cape Henry and a 15-minute walk south to Neptune Park, the de facto center of the boardwalk. The Norfolk International Airport is a half-hour drive away.
Rooms
Nautical-themed rooms with balconies
Virginia Beach hotels often feature nautical-themed rooms with blue and yellow decor. The Holiday Inn is no exception, but there's also green incorporated here, and wood furniture is cherry-colored. Amenities include flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, microwaves, coffeemakers, and mini-fridges. Some bathrooms have shower/tub combos. Suites also have kitchenettes. All units have balconies with chairs and free Wi-Fi.
Features
Lots of amenities for children and business travelers, and three on-site restaurants
The hotel offers plenty for families with small children. Children can be dropped off at the activity center, Splash Kamp, which has arts, crafts, games, and a resident African tortoise. There's also a small movie theater inside the hotel that has 48 seats and a projection screen. There's also a small fitness center with cardio equipment and free weights, a roomy business center with four workstations and a combo fax/photocopier/printer, and a large meeting/event room with an atrium-style ceiling. The outdoor pool, while spacious, can get crowded; there's also an indoor lazy river pool and a second outdoor splash lagoon. There are three on-site restaurants, one of which -- the Isle of Capri -- has ocean views. Parking is free.
