Bottom Line

Popular with budget-conscious visitors to Virginia Beach, the Belvedere Beach Resort is more of an inn than an actual resort, though it does have a pool and direct beach access. All 50 rooms have a nautical theme and look out over the ocean. There's an on-site diner serving breakfast and lunch, and rooms have mini-fridges and microwaves for guests who want to prepare basic meals. It's open only seven months out of the year, however, so budget travelers visiting in the winter should check out the mid-range Holiday Inn nearby.

Scene

Seasonal budget hotel popular with vacationers

Housed in a large, white concrete building and dwarfed by larger hotels on each side, the Belvedere looks a bit like it belongs in the 1960s, at least from the outside. The inside is more consciously "retro" and charmingly quaint than dated, with simple sky-blue and white sofas, a few duck pillows, and a small collection of books in the lobby. The walls are paneled with a pale wood that resembles driftwood, and there's a small shop selling sundries. The hotel is popular with families and couples on a budget vacation, and while there is free Wi-Fi, there's little else to attract business travelers. It's open only for seven months out of the year.

Location

Right on the beach, a short drive from local attractions

Tucked in between two larger hotels on the northern end of Virginia Beach, the Belvedere Beach Resort is convenient to local shops and restaurants, and right on the beach. The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center is a 10-minute drive away, and the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art is seven minutes away by car. The lighthouse at Cape Henry is 15 minutes up the road by car and the Norfolk International Airport is a half-hour drive away.

Rooms

Oceanfront rooms with a nautical theme

All 50 rooms at the Belvedere face the ocean and have a nautical theme, with ocean-blue carpeting, driftwood-style wall paneling, and bedside lamps that resemble lighthouses. Beds have accent cushions embroidered with images of marine animals or beach scenes, and all rooms come with a free bag of saltwater taffy. All rooms have with air-conditioning, 32-inch flat-screen TVs, microwaves, and mini-fridges. There are Ground Floor and Upper Floor Efficiency units, which have kitchenettes. Room service is available for breakfast and lunch. Bathrooms have shower/tub combos.

Features

Outdoor pool and an old-school Southern diner

The Belvedere's biggest draw is its beachside location, but there are a few features within the hotel's gate that are pluses for many a traveler. The 1950s-style Belvedere Coffee Shop and Diner serves filling breakfasts and lunches, including plenty of Southern specialties. There's also a medium-size outdoor swimming pool surrounded by lounge chairs on all sides, although it's located next to a parking lot with an ugly gate around it. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property, as is parking, and while there's no fitness center, there are bicycles that guests can borrow for free.
