Bottom Line

For budget travelers who want a hotel with a contemporary design, the two-pearl Town House 50 Hotel is a good pick. There’s a homey vibe found both in the blue and white decor throughout the property and in free perks like Wi-Fi and a local and international breakfast buffet. Dorm rooms are tight on space but have air-conditioning and attached bathrooms. For something a bit larger, the private rooms offer flat-screen TVs and (in some) mini-fridges. While rooms lack kettles and some reportedly have mold in the bathrooms, for the price and location, it’s a pretty good deal. The nearby Cinnamon Hotel Saigon is a great alternative with spacious rooms with kettles and a free a la carte breakfast.

Scene

Small property with a homey vibe and clientele of budget travelers

Town House 50 Hotel is a small hostel-style property that’s popular with a wide range of budget travelers like couples, backpackers, and groups of friends thanks to diverse sleeping options. The entrance is hidden from the main street down an alley, so finding the door can be a challenge, but once inside, guests find themselves to be quite content. Before entering, travelers must adhere to local customs by leaving their shoes in cubbies at the front door. But don’t worry -- the front desk is adamant about watching the entryway morning to night. There’s not much to the public spaces besides a combined lobby and dining area on the bottom floor, but the owners have managed to make it look homey with a blue and white color scheme and an array of indoor and outdoor tables. It’s the small touches like free fruit throughout the day and free postcards exhibiting traditional Vietnamese art that shows the care the hotel takes in creating a pleasant atmosphere. While the building does not have an elevator, staff are on hand to help with luggage.

Location

20-minute walk or less to major attractions in Ho Chi Minh City

Town house 50 Hotel has a decent location for exploring the city. The surrounding area is filled with shops and restaurant options and some attractions are within walking distance. Independence Palace takes 19 minutes to reach on foot, while the Saigon Notre Dame Basilica is a 20-minute walk away. For handmade crafts and souvenir finds, the Ben Thanh market is a 15-minute walk from the hotel. There’s a bus stop that’s a three-minute walk away, for attractions that are too far to reach on foot. It’s a 25-minute drive to the Tan Son Nhat International Airport.

Rooms

Private rooms with flat-screen TVs or dorm rooms with bunk beds and en-suite bathrooms

The guest rooms here range from private rooms to male and female dormitories, all of which are pleasant in design. Dorms are as you’d expect -- tight on floor space and filled with bunk beds and lockers. However, wall art of different cities around the world is a nice touch, as are in-room bathrooms with fun blue and white tiles and showers. Still, there’s more space in the private rooms which feature lovely wood floors and colorful decor, often featuring artistic wall displays of  tree or bird silhouettes. Private rooms also have the added benefits of flat-screen TVs, bottled water, and (in some) mini-fridges. All units are outfitted with air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi. The private room bathrooms have showers, toiletries, and hairdryers. Note that some guests have reported mold in the rooms and bathrooms.

Features

Free local and international breakfast and free Wi-Fi

Town House 50 Hotel offers few features. However, guests get a free morning breakfast that includes fresh fruits and pastries, as well as local options like spring rolls and dumplings. There’s not much else beyond the breakfast besides free Wi-Fi and two public computers. A 24/7 pick-up service is available for a fee and might be a convenient option for travelers who need transportation at odd hours.
