Lien Hiep Thanh Resort is a small backpacker’s property located right on a lovely beach a 10-minute drive from Duong Dong and within walking distance of a few casual cafes. Its 39 rooms range from basic and bare bones (think: no hot water, no air-conditioning, and tiny bathrooms with wet room-style showers) to cute, with patios furnished with hammocks, and thatched roofs. All, however, have free Wi-Fi, free bottled water, and mini-fridges. A small beach restaurant is all there is in the way of amenities, but the hotel is popular among couples and young groups of friends for its laid-back atmosphere, small but pretty beach, and location near a few hopping bars. At neighboring Viet Thanh Resort all rooms have air-conditioning and rates are a little cheaper.
Scene
Small, casual hotel with pleasant grounds and a nice stretch of beach
Tucked away in a small alley along with a handful of other budget properties and beach bars, the Lien Hiep Thanh offers backpackers and travelers on a budget a friendly, no-frills place to spend a few relaxing days by the beach. The resort is basic overall, with just a small lobby decorated with terra-cotta tile floors and a couple of green benches, and a casual beach restaurant with a few tables on the sand. Rooms are spread over a small three-story building and several brick bungalows set amid manicured gardens with tropical flowers and palm trees. Although the hotel itself is not a place to party, the atmosphere at the beach is lively and fun, as music from neighboring beach bars carries. Having a popular nightlife area directly adjacent to the hotel may be an issue for some, but during our visit, guests (most of whom were young couples and backpackers from Russia and Germany) seemed to enjoy the easy access to the fun, retreating late to their rooms and nursing their hangovers on the beach the following morning.
Those traveling on a shoestring budget may find the Lien Hiep decent for the price, but those seeking something a little nicer may want to consider the Thanh Kieu Beach Resort, which has cuter rooms with air-conditioning, and lovely grounds. The adjacent Viet Thanh Resort is basic and a tad drab, but rates are generally a little lower, all of its rooms are air-conditioned, and guests get free access to a pool across the street. Those with a bigger budget may want to check out the Daisy Resort, which has charming rooms with outdoor bathrooms, a beautiful pool with panoramic views, and an excellent restaurant.
Location
In a quiet back alley lined with casual beach cafes and bars
The Lien Hiep Thanh Resort is located at the end of a back alley running parallel to the beach and the main road in Phu Quoc. Despite its somewhat secluded location, the area is home to a surprising number of casual, inexpensive beach cafes and bars popular with backpackers. Next-door neighbor Rory’s Beach Bar is one of the most popular around, and noise can be an issue at night. The main road, located about a five-minute walk away, offers a wider array of dining and drinking options, as does the city of Duong Dong, found less than 10 minutes by car from the hotel. The town's popular night market -- selling everything from pearls to fresh sea food and souvenirs -- is also about a 10-minute drive away. Stunning Sao Beach, known for its fine, white sand and cafes, can be reached in about 40 minutes. The airport is about a 15-minute drive away.
Rooms
Bare-bones rooms with free Wi-Fi and mini-fridges, but little else
The hotel’s 39 rooms are divided into three main categories: Classic, Deluxe, and Beach Bungalows. The cheapest are Classic Fan Rooms, with no air-conditioning, no hot water, and no safes; on the other end of the spectrum are the Beach Bungalows, which have sea views, cute thatched roofs, and bigger bathrooms with stone accents and wooden vanities. Decor is basic in all rooms, though, with terra-cotta tile floors, bare walls, heavy wooden desks with two matching chairs, and small closets. All rooms feature free Wi-Fi, free bottled water, and a mini-fridge, but most lack TVs (only five rooms have one) and safes, and hairdryers are only available on request. Most rooms feature either a balcony or a small patio, but some Classic Rooms have neither. Bathrooms are for the most part tiny and old, with just a small sink, a toilet, and a wet room-style shower. The toiletries provided are two sachets of shampoo and two small bars of soap.
Rooms closest to Rory’s Beach Bar can get noise until the wee hours.
Features
Lovely, small beach with a casual restaurant and sunset drinks
One of the best features at Lien Hiep Thanh Resort is the beach, complete with a number of cushioned loungers and big straw umbrellas. The sand is fine and generally free of trash, and the music from the neighboring bar gives it a laid-back, friendly atmosphere. Housed in a cute palapa, the hotel’s restaurant is especially popular for sunset drinks, and its barbecue nights draw plenty of guests and non-guests in high season. A tasty, free breakfast is also served here every morning, including Vietnamese and continental options and fresh fruit. The lunch menu is short but decent, complete with a range of international, local, and Asian dishes at reasonable prices.
