Scene

Intimate, friendly pension hotel that's particularly welcoming to LGBT guests

Pension Wild is housed in a five-floor white building originally erected in 1904. Opened in 1960 as a hotel, the Pension has been owned by one family its entire existence. The feel here is intimate, warm, and friendly, and the owner converses with guests each morning at breakfast, served in a simple space with varnished light wood floors, light wood furniture, and white tablecloths. The hotel is particularly welcoming to LGBT guests, and it shares a building with a gay sauna facility that offers discounts for hotel guests. Guests on extended stays particularly benefit from the kitchen apartments, situated in a building a five-minute walk away.

Location

Central Vienna location in quiet Josefstadt District, a short walk from tram, U-Bahn, and Museum Quarter

Pension Wild is in central Vienna on a side street in the quiet and elegant Josefstadt District, a short walk from restaurants, bars, shops, and the boutiques and galleries of the hip Neubau neighborhood. The Auerspergstrasse tram stop is a three-minute walk. The Rathaus and Volkstheater U-Bahn stations are about five minutes on foot. The hotel is about a five-minute walk from the Ringstrasse (Ring Road), the grand boulevard surrounding the old city. Also about five minutes away on foot are the 19th-century Austrian Parliament building of Greek Revival design, and the 19th-century Neo-Gothic Rathaus city hall on Rathausplatz square, which hosts concerts, festivals, a winter ice rink, and Christmas market. The Kunsthistorisches Museum (Museum of Fine Arts) and Museum Quarter are about a 10-minute walk. The Naschmarkt open-air food market and Hofburg Palace (home to Lipizzaner Stallions performances) are 15 minutes away on foot. Pension Wild is about a 25-minute drive (in good traffic) or an hour and 30 minutes by train and S-bahn from Vienna International Airport.

Rooms

Simple, but pleasant rooms with free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs; some with shared baths

The Pension Wild has regular guest rooms in the main building, plus apartments in a separate building a five-minute walk away. Rooms have a simple and uncluttered but overall cheery appearance, with light wood furniture, light yellow walls, and colorful art, and some have gold-yellow curtains and/or blue carpets. The beds have earned praise from previous guests for their comfortable foam mattresses. Each of the units come with flat-screen TVs, safes, and free Wi-Fi. All regular rooms lack kettles, but upgraded rooms include minibars, and apartments feature living rooms and full kitchens. Rooms also lack air-conditioning, but it rarely gets oppressively hot in Vienna, and the in-room fans do a decent job of cooling rooms. Bathrooms are done in white tile and are clean and well lit, but some are small and have limited counter space around the sinks.  Some rooms have the sink and shower in the bedroom, and some rooms share a bathroom (showers only, no tubs) with other rooms.

Features

Free breakfast with hot and cold items, bike rental, and adjacent gay-friendly sauna facility

Pension Wild has limited in-house property features but it shares the building with a gay-friendly spa facility, which offers a Finnish sauna, steam room, solarium, relaxation room, and bar. Guests of the Pension receive a discount. The hotel serves a well-reviewed free breakfast buffet, offering a big spread of eggs, sausages, and a wide range of cold items. There is no lunch or dinner service on-site, but there are numerous restaurants within a short walk of the hotel. The hotel also offers bike rentals, tourist assistance, and a unisex public bathroom with shower. The front desk has limited hours, but guests can enter the building at all hours via secure key card entry, and the staff is available 24 hours a day. The hotel offers day parking tickets for parking in the immediate vicinity of the hotel (parking is free overnight and on weekends and holidays). There is also a nearby paid parking lot for a 24-hour fee, for those who need it.
