Bottom Line

Opened in 2014, the 253-room Melia Vienna hotel is a luxury property situated within Danube City Tower, Austria’s tallest building. Guest rooms and suites feature floor-to-ceiling windows -- some with spectacular views of the river -- luxurious bedding, spacious black-and-white bathrooms, and such niceties as Nespresso machines. The style is modern minimalism mixed with moody chic, although some guests find it too dark. The hotel also includes a rooftop bar, top-floor restaurant, lobby bar, fitness area, business services, and 24-hour room service. Situated in the Danube City business district near the United Nations, the hotel might be more convenient for business travelers than tourists, but it's near public transportation, so it is easy to get around. For a modern luxury hotel closer to sightseeing attractions, travelers could try the Sofitel Vienna Stephansdom.

Scene

Modern luxury hotel with chic, moody decor, situated in Austria’s tallest building

The Melia Vienna hotel is uniquely situated in Danube City Tower (DC Tower 1), Austria’s tallest building. The modern skyscraper has a zigzagging glass-faceted facade that includes the hotel, residences, retail space, and restaurants. Opened in 2014, the Melia Vienna, part of an international Spanish hotel chain, occupies floors four through 15. Particularly attuned to business travelers given its location, the hotel exudes sophisticated, modern austerity in dark tones with chic white and metallic silver accents. In the lobby, black and white tile floors offer the perfect contrast for a large, twisting central staircase in bright hammered silver. A small sitting area features fresh-looking white furniture and cafe tables, while the lobby extends into a chic, modern lounge bar and eating spot with seating at tables, a couch, or the bar. While the hotel’s location makes it most convenient for business travelers, its modern amenities, excellent city views, and proximity to public transportation draws tourists too.

Location

In the Danube City business district near the United Nations

The hotel is located in the Danube City business district, which isn’t particularly charming or interesting, but it is well-connected to public transportation. The Kaisermühlen VIC underground (U-Bahn) station is a four-minute walk from the Melia Vienna, and it's about a 10-minute ride to Old Town. From there, most tourist attractions are within walking distance. The hotel is also about a 10-minute walk to the Danube River and Danube Island (Donauinsel), a popular recreation area, and a seven-minute walk to the United Nations and Austria Center Vienna. Vienna International Airport is about 20 minutes away by car.

Rooms

Trendy modern rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows, spacious bathrooms with surround-sound, and Nespresso machines

The 253 rooms at the Melia Vienna feature stylish, modern decor, with floor-to-ceiling windows. They range in style and size from the smallest Standard Room to several types of Suites, with sitting areas or kitchenettes, or corner rooms with panoramic views. Standard Rooms have beige carpeting, white walls, and textured headboards that mimic the building’s facade. White bedding is accented with gray and green velvety throws and pillows, while white desks offer a range of media connections. These are the smallest rooms, with the beds directly facing what is essentially a wall of windows, and some guests find these rooms too small for the price. Bathrooms are spacious and chic, with full black tiling and white fixtures. Large glass-walled showers have rainfall showerheads, surround sound, and luxury toiletries. But some guests complain that the bathrooms' glass wall compromises privacy. All rooms include work desks with media outlets, wardrobes, luxury mattresses and linens, bathrobes, slippers, flat-screen TVs, individual temperature and mood lighting controls, free Wi-Fi, and charging laptop safes. Nice touches include Nespresso machines and minibars stocked with free drinks. High-floor river-facing rooms offer the best views.

Features

Rooftop bar, top-floor restaurant, fitness area, 24-hour room service, and business amenities

The hotel offers many services for business travelers, and many of its facilities take advantage of its location in Austria’s tallest skyscraper. The chic lobby bar and lounge, Flow, serves coffee and Viennese dishes as well as an extensive breakfast, which is not usually included in the room rate. The 57 Restaurant, situated on the tower’s top floor, serves Austrian and Mediterranean cuisine (with vegan options) in chic, upscale environs with a dark moody vibe and astounding city views through floor-to-ceiling windows, while the rooftop bar hosts a DJ on the weekend. Guests should note that both the 57 Restaurant and lounge have evening dress codes, and are closed Sunday and Monday. The hotel also has nine event rooms, for anything from conferences to weddings, including smaller meeting rooms and a Grand Ballroom on the first floor with an outdoor terrace. Guests in exclusive “The Level” rooms get access to a 57th floor lounge. The hotel has its own fitness center with white walls, wood floors, and window views -- with weight and cardio equipment as well as free weights. While the hotel does not have its own pool or sauna, both are available for a fee at the John Harris Fitness center, housed in the same building.International secretarial services are available for an extra fee, as are laundry services, babysitters, airport transfers, medical services, and parking. Room service is available 24-hours, a concierge can assist with travel plans, and there's free overnight shoe shine service and turndown service. The hotel is eco-friendly, and free Wi-Fi can is available throughout the hotel.
