The upper-middle-range Prinz Eugen Hotel is a traditional hotel situated right next to Vienna's main train station, less than a 10-minute walk from Belvedere Palace and well-connected to the heart of the city via public transit. The hotel's 106 rooms are a bit bland and dated (tube TVs still haven't been replaced with flat-screens), but they're spacious and comfortable with sitting areas, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi. The hotel offers a nice free breakfast buffet and has a small lobby bar, but there's no full-service restaurant or wellness facilities. By comparison, Hotel de France offers similar decor and more property features closer to the city center.
Scene
Comfortable, traditional hotel with somewhat dated decor
The Hotel Prinz Eugen is situated in a rather bland eight-story square building, though the interior feels more high-end (or at least a slightly dated version of high-end) with traditional decor. Dark wood paneled walls, chandeliers, rich red carpeting, and high-backed armchairs finished with striped or plaid upholstery set the tone. It may not be quite the fancy affair it once was, but the hotel still offers spacious guest rooms and, at least in the lobby, an upscale air. Plus, it can be hardly closer to the city's main train station.
Location
Near the main train station and Belvedere Palace
While the Prinz Eugen Hotel is slightly outside of the city center in Vienna's embassy district, it's situated just a five-minute walk from the city's main train station, which also has shops, and about a six-minute walk from the nearest tram and subway stations, which can take guests to the center of old town in about 10 minutes. Belvedere Palace is less than a 10-minute walk away. Vienna International Airport can be reached in under a half hour by public transit, and airport shuttle service can be arranged through the hotel.
Rooms
Spacious rooms -- but decor and amenities are dated
While rooms are generally clean and fairly spacious, decor is uninspired and dated. Red wall-to-wall carpeting, white walls, beige curtains, light wood furniture, and white-tiled bathrooms feel bland and old-fashioned. But even entry-level single rooms come with sitting areas, work desks, and wardrobes, plus amenities like electronic safes and empty mini-fridges come standard. Rooms are air-conditioned, and Wi-Fi is free. While rooms have TVs, they're mostly old tube TVs. Bathrooms may have walk-in showers or combination showers and tubs, and include hairdryers and soap dispensers. Upgraded rooms add coffee/tea service and room service is available during limited hours. Housekeeping comes daily.
Features
Free breakfast buffet and lobby bar, but few other amenities
Hotel Prinz Eugen is advertised as an upscale hotel, but it's clearly missing those top-shelf features -- there's no full-service restaurant, gym, or spa. Still, the hotel offers a pretty good free breakfast buffet with a range of cold and hot options (including fresh pancakes), and a small lobby bar that's opened evenings. There are also meeting facilities, plus free Wi-Fi and room service during limited hours. The front desk is open 24-hours, and staff can arrange for airport transfers, laundry service, or luggage storage.
