Bottom Line

The boutique, upper-mid-range, Hotel Konig Von Ungarn has been in operation since 1746, making it one of the oldest hotels in Vienna. Its classical restaurant sits below apartments that Mozart once lived in, and the central courtyard's glass ceiling makes for a great place to lounge in the heart of the city. Apart from the two-story suites though, the rooms tend not to be as interesting as the rest of the hotel and there's an odd mix of styles, with a quaint old-fashioned decor in one section of rooms and a bold modern design in another. Rooms facing the street can be noisy, so light sleepers should request interior rooms. Free breakfast and Wi-Fi helps to keep costs down.

Scene

Medieval architecture with a history of prestigious guests

The family-run hotel exudes a romantic, traditional atmosphere that makes it popular with tourists who love history. The building was a guesthouse for important visitors to St. Stephen's Cathedral for at least two centuries before becoming a proper hotel in the 18th century. It took its current name (which means King of Hungary) another century later during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, when Hungarian nobility booked extended stays in its finest apartments. The interiors retain some beautiful details of the past, and its glass ceiling courtyard still attracts well-connected locals.

Location

In the heart of the city, near Stephansplatz

Hotel Konig Von Ungarn is in Vienna's first district, Innere Stadt, right down the street from St. Stephen's Cathedral and Stephansplatz. Nearly all the city center's attractions, including museums, designer shopping, and fine-dining, are within walking distance, and the Stephansplatz U-Bahn station -- a three-minute walk away -- allows for easy access to other parts of the city. The elegant shopping on Kohlmarkt Street, home to brands like Tiffany, Louis Vuitton, and Chanel, is an eight-minute stroll from the hotel. The Vienna International Airport is about a 25-minute cab ride.

Rooms

Individually decorated rooms with old-fashioned or entirely modern decor

Most of the 44 rooms are styled to match the classical ambiance of the hotel, and the most ornate have intricate wallpaper or wood-paneled interiors. Chandeliers and 19th-century-style furniture combine to create a Viennese Classical look that ranges from homely to aristocratic. The new rooms in a separate, modern wing contain mid-century designer furnishings with mint and purple accents. The bathrooms have a mix of layouts with either walk-in showers or shower/tub combos. Some add bidets, and larger rooms have walk-in rainfall showers with separate soaking tubs. Bathrooms have small free-standing sinks and plenty of added counter space for personal toiletries with conveniently placed shelves. Many bathrooms also have little carts and stools thoughtfully included.

Features

Courtyard lounge bar, traditional Viennese restaurant, and free buffet breakfast

The heart of the hotel is its interior central courtyard that rises to a glass ceiling, creating a welcoming space filled with natural light. Two of its high walls are paneled with dark wood and inset with attractive arched windows. These provide a view from higher floors down onto trees growing from planters integrated into the tiled floor, between cafe tables and chairs. The small bar tucked under a low archway stays open late. Deeper into the hotel, the restaurant's vaulted baroque ceiling sits under apartments where Mozart is believed to have composed The Marriage of Figaro. The restaurant has been serving traditional Viennese cuisine since 1746, and guests are offered a free breakfast buffet that now includes scrambled eggs, omelets, sausage, and an array of baked goods. The hotel also has a single modern meeting space with glass tables, black-and-white floors and wallpaper, and futuristic ceiling lamp fixtures, while a second meeting room stays true to the buildings roots, with dark paneling beneath low vaulted ceilings. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
