For guests who prize functionality over design, the 54 guest rooms and suites of this classic style hotel should satisfy. All the basic necessities are met at the three-pearl property, and a few times exceeded, be it in the bar, coffeehouse, or spa. The excellent location amidst Vienna's upscale hipster neighborhoods west of the ring road is a selling point. Indeed, many of the city's main attractions are within a 20-minute walk, and the nearby tram and metro can quickly reach the rest. The property's traditional decor is pleasant enough, but may feel fussy and overdone to some. Guest rooms lighten up the tone, but don't update it. All have kitchenettes, though they're missing microwaves, and some units lack AC. For those seeking a more contemporary aesthetic at a similar level of quality and location, head two blocks south to the Hotel Altstadt.
Scene
Traditional decor with a few contemporary touches for families and couples
It feels like a time warp stepping into the Cordial Theater Hotel Wien. For some, the traditional decor may feel classy, but for most of the couples and families that compose the clientele, the heavy browns, golds, reds, and oranges may seem tired and worn. It also adds a weight to the air in the lobby, somewhat lightened by the glass ceiling. The spirit continues into the large dining area, which wraps around the breakfast buffet and then tucks into the bar. Complete with red leather bar stools, “Belcanto” could fit on the set of any 1970s movie, and it does have a hint of retro appeal. If there’s any bow to the modern world, it’s in the hotel’s coffee bar “Intermezzo,” at the front of the building. The bright garden terrace adds another escape to the light.
Location
Upscale hipster neighborhood outside city center, but walking distance to sights
Some of Vienna’s hippest neighborhoods extend west of ring road that surrounds the historic inner core. Set along one of the main streets running through them, the Cordial Theaterhotel reaps many of the benefits, with a plethora of cute restaurants, cafes, and fashion boutiques on the surrounding blocks. The major sights of Vienna are not much farther, most within a 20-minute walk, and there's a nearby metro station and tram stop for sights farther afield. Thanks to the metro line, Vienna’s main train station is only 23 minutes away, and the airport, just 39 minutes. - 14-minute walk to MuseumsQuartier
Rooms
Straightforward guest rooms with kitchenettes, but no microwaves
The 54 guest rooms and suites won’t wow you -- expect red carpeting, dark-wood cabinetry, floral curtains, and sofas and chairs holding on to the mid-20th century. But for functionality, they go a long way, though some don't have AC. All contain kitchenettes with two burner stoves, minibars, and coffeemakers, and kettles are available upon request, but there are no microwaves. Other amenities include flat-screen TVs, radios, safes, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are basic but tidy, with shower/tub combos, tube-style hairdryers, and wall-mounted soap dispensers. Upgrade to a suite and get a separate seating area with sofa bed. Light sleepers should aim for upper floors, as the hotel's position along the main street means additional noise for street-side rooms near the ground floor.
Features
A modest lineup of amenities, including a restaurant, bar, cafe, and small spa
The Cordial Theaterhotel has a decent set of features for a comfortable stay. There's a cafe with espresso, a garden terrace that adds a flowery sunlit escape, and there's also a hotel bar. But instant gratification is probably strongest in the small spa, with sauna, solarium, and treatments. There's no fitness facilities on-site, however. The hotel has a concierge, and for an extra fee there's a large buffet breakfast of good quality; laundry and dry cleaning service; and babysitting and childcare. A business center, meeting and conference rooms, rental car service desk, on-site parking (advance reservations required), and free Wi-Fi throughout round out the amenities on offer.
