Grand Hotel Principe di Piemonte
Piazza Puccini 1

The upscale Grand Hotel Principe de Piemonte was originally built in 1922 and remains one of the most upscale hotels in Viareggio. It's located on the north end of the beach, slightly away from the main buzz. The hotel is home to a rooftop Michelin-star restaurant, all-day dining restaurant with ocean views, rooftop swimming pool, modern fitness center, and a full spa. All guests get access to the Excelsior Beach Club's sun loungers and restaurant.  The 106 rooms are divided into five distinct decor categories. The modern rooms are the most up-to-date and the imperial rooms feel classic, but some of the other categories may be too much for some tastes. For a hotel that's closer to the harbor, with an indoor pool, rates are lower at Sina Astor

Hotel Marchionni
Piazza Giacomo Puccini 2

Hotel Marchionni was built in the 1920s and today it still reflects much of its original Art Deco style over four stories and 40 guest rooms accessible via a beautiful glass cage elevator. The location is another strong point; Marchionni is one block from the beach and one block from the city's enormous park. The rooms mimic the public area's Art Deco style, but the look may be too vintage for some tastes. Free continental breakfast is included in all rates, and there's a lobby bar for cocktails and wines. The hotel partners with a nearby beach club, allowing discounts for use of their pool and sun loungers. For an alternative with a pool and more modern rooms, check out Sina Astor Hotel -- but note that rates are higher.

Grand Hotel Royal, BW Premier Collection
Lungomare Carducci 44

As you approach the three-pearl Best Western Grand Hotel Royal, it's easy to forget this is a chain property and hard not to be impressed by the beautiful grandeur of the building's 1900s Art-Nouveau facade. Much of the interior also has a certain wow factor, though some hallways and rooms could use a bit of freshening up. The pool and gardens are a real highlight, and the private beach is a bonus, but it's pricey to use (typical to the area). Rates are reasonable for this type of hotel, but can vary a lot depending on room type. Expect to pay a fair bit extra for a room with a sea view. Breakfast and Wi-Fi are included.

Sina Astor
Lungomare Carducci 54

Sina Astor is an excellent upscale choice across the street from the beach and pedestrian promenade in Viareggio. There are lots of hotels along the same stretch, but what sets Sina Astor apart is its range of facilities: an indoor pool, fitness center, full spa, free breakfast buffet, American Bar, discounts at two beach clubs, and a dinner restaurant. Bikes to borrow and Wi-Fi are free, but parking costs extra. The 76 contemporary guest rooms and suites feature boutique styling and some have nice extras like whirlpool tubs, ocean views, and outdoor spaces. All guests have access to the furnished rooftop terrace that overlooks the beach. For something with lower rates (but fewer features) check out the nearby and more classically decorated Hotel President.

Hotel President
Viale Giosue' Carducci 5

The three-and-a-half-pearl Hotel President offers some of the most elegant and clean rooms in one of the best locations in Viareggio, directly across the street from the promenade, bike lane, and beach. The 50 rooms are classically decorated and feature spacious bathrooms. Many of them have furnished balconies and either partial or full sea views. All rates include a gourmet breakfast buffet that offers hot items and sparkling wine. Half-board rates add Italian seafood dinner in the refined dining room. There's a lovely drawing room with a full bar. The biggest downside is the lack of parking, though there's a nearby garage and metered street parking. The hotel partners with a nearby beach club for discounted sun loungers. For something with parking and a pool, check rates down the street at Sina Astor
