  • Ideal location in the heart of the city

  • Lovely courtyard is reserved for hotel guests by early evening

  • Free breakfast delivered to the guest rooms

Cons

  • No restaurant or bar

  • Unreliable air-conditioning

  • Not near public transportation

Bottom Line

The Sogno di Giulietta is an inn with a gimmick: It shares a courtyard with the very balcony from which Shakespeare's Juliet was wooed by her Romeo. Whether or not this is historical fact appears to make no difference to the throngs of tourists who descend on the area. Fortunately, guests have the courtyard to themselves when the gates are padlocked in the early evening. The hotel has the feel of a luxurious B&B, since it lacks common areas and additional amenities. The rooms themselves — each named after a line in Shakespeare's famous play — are extravagantly decorated and include sumptuous private baths.

Scene

A small property with Renaissance charm

The hotel is housed within a red brick mansion with wrought iron balconies. Some rooms have direct views of Juliet's balcony and others face the Via Cappello and the city's barrel-vaulted rooftops. All rooms are lavishly furnished with elaborately carved furniture, flowing draperies, and opulent works of art.

Location

In the heart of historic Verona, but far from the metro

Sogno di Giulietta is in the historic center of Verona, within walking distance of the city's major shops and attractions, including Piazza delle Erbe, Piazza Brà, and the Verona Arena. Guests will need to walk or take a taxi to reach the hotel, as there is no public transport within the immediate area.

Rooms

Period details and modern conveniences

Each of the 16 suites are lavishly decorated with gilded wood furniture, canopied beds, crystal chandeliers, velvet drapes, and expansive baths with modern fixtures. One example is IIl Germoglio, a duplex with a spiral staircase leading up to a spa-like bathroom with a two-person jetted tub. All rooms have parquet floors and high ceilings with exposed wooden beams. Air-conditioning -- which doesn't always work well -- is included, as is free Wi-Fi. In addition to the suites, the hotel has a one-bedroom apartment with a large living area and kitchenette available within the courtyard complex.

Features

Free breakfast and Wi-Fi, but no other amenities

A daily continental breakfast delivered to the guest rooms is a nice perk, as is the free Wi-Fi, but the hotel lacks any other amenities. Parking is available for guests, but it costs an additional daily fee.
