The Escalus is a small boutique hotel in the old city center that has the feel of a B&B, though it is much more luxurious. Aside from in-room breakfast, there are few services. What you’re paying for is the exclusivity and contemporary, elegant design. Travelers looking for more amenities should try the five-pearl Palazzo Victoria, which has a restaurant and (usually) slightly better rates.
Scene
Simple and chic
This tiny boutique exudes understated luxury throughout all the interior spaces, starting with the small lobby. Reached from an unassuming glass door off a quiet cobblestone alley, the hotel’s reception area is simple and chic. It has few furnishings (think modern leather sofas, a small desk with a laptop, and a simple wood front desk) and is the property’s only common area. It sets the stage for the spacious suites, which feature the same sleek design style.
Location
In the heart of the historic center and less than a five-minute walk from the Arena
Escalus has a great location in the heart of the historic center. It is situated less than a five-minute walk from the Arena di Verona and the Piazza Bra. Shops and restaurants are right outside the door. It’s around a 20-minute walk from the Porta Nuova train station. The street is in a limited traffic area, so guests traveling by car should provide reception with their license plate number to enter the area, and they will be given information about parking near the hotel. Juliet’s balcony, also known as the Porta Nuova , is a five-minute walk from the hotel (whose name was actually inspired by a character in Shakespeare's famous love story). The medieval Castelvecchio Bridge and Castelvecchio Museum are a 10-minute walk away.
Rooms
Large, clean, and modern
The property is comprised of just 10 suites. They are the picture of modern elegance, with light hardwood floors, wood furniture, soft grey walls, and an airy feel throughout. The Design Junior Suite has a four-poster bed. Rooms have flat-screen TVs, minibars, kettles, safes, robes, and hairdryers. Bathrooms have sleek, colorful countertops and large, glass-walled stall showers with modern fixtures. The Vicolo Tre Marchetti is a popular pedestrian area, so rooms facing the street can be noisy.
Features
In-room breakfast, but not much else
Breakfast is room service only, which is a nice luxury — guests fill out a form in the room with their choice of food options and time of delivery. The staff is also helpful in suggesting restaurants and providing sightseeing tips. Another perk is free Wi-Fi, but the hotel lacks other amenities typical of four-star properties.
