Bottom Line

In the heart of Verona, the Accademia Hotel is a classically elegant, mid-range property within walking distance of the town's most important sights. The 94 rooms, some of which have terraces, range from small Singles to spacious Suites, some with jetted tubs. There's also a handsome on-site restaurant, where breakfast (included in the room rate) is served, and a fitness center with a range of equipment. Common areas, from the sleek-looking bar area with purple velvet chairs to the chandeliers and gold gilt of the lobby, evoke opulence, but the rooms dial this look back a bit, and some appear in need of an update. Still, the Accademia's central location and refined air make it a decent choice for those looking for a bit of understated elegance in Verona.

Scene

Classic, elegant decor in imposing historical building

The Accademia has a regal exterior, with a large, imposing arched doorway topped by columns with statues, not unlike what one might find in a cathedral. The lobby is classically decorated, with collections of plush, chestnut-colored leather sofas, shiny wood floors, and paintings on molded walls. Even the hallways are elegant, with large, gilded mirrors and antique chests of drawers. Throughout  the hotel are small sitting areas, some with plush, soft velvet sofas and crystal chandeliers hung overhead. Although the hotel attracts tourists visiting the historic sights of Verona, its central location, bar, and large number of seating areas that are conducive to small meetings, make it a good choice for business travelers too.

Location

In a pedestrian area in the heart of Verona's historic center

The Accademia Hotel is located in a pedestrian area in Verona's historic center, between Piazza Bra and Piazza delle Erbe, set among shops, restaurants, bars, and other hotels. The Porta Nuova railway station is a six-minute drive from the Accademia, and the airport is a 20-minute drive, depending on traffic. Although the Accademia is in a pedestrian-only zone, cars transporting goods and people are allowed into the zone, so guests with lots of luggage needn't despair. Parking at the hotel is available in a garage, but there's a daily cost.

Rooms

Simply furnished rooms and suites with warm color schemes

Rooms at the Accademia range from tiny Single Rooms to huge Suites. All rooms come with minibars, electronic safes, air-conditioning, and flat-screen TVs with satellite channels. Decor is simple -- especially compared with the rest of the property -- with red carpeting, plain wooden wardrobes and desks, and cozy cream-colored walls, usually with no more than a framed print or two for decoration. While they feel comfortably homey, they also look a little dated, and guests have complained about hard beds. Bathrooms have either walk-in showers or shower/tub combos, along with telephones, bidets, and basic toiletries. Some suites have exposed wooden beams and jetted tubs in the bathrooms.

Features

Fitness center, free Wi-Fi and Internet terminals, and elegant restaurant with free breakfast

The Accademia has free Wi-Fi throughout the property -- those without a mobile device or laptop can also use one of two Internet terminals, which come with large desktop computers and attached printer/scanners. There's also a small meeting room with audiovisual equipment. The hotel's fitness room has exercise bikes and a variety of free weights. There's a terrace with views of the area's roofs and plenty of seating areas. A free continental breakfast heavy on cakes and breads is served daily in the Accademia's elegant restaurant. At lunch and dinner, the cuisine focuses heavily on seafood, although a few red meat dishes are on offer as well. There's also  a fixed-price menu with multiple choices, which is finished off with a treat from the dessert trolley. Guests can rent bikes for the day.
