Rooms could use an update
This 96-room lodge has become a destination unto itself, not just for its excellent amenities and impressive views, but for its rich history. The charming property is still run by the famous Trapp family, whose story was told in the movie The Sound of Music, and original memorabilia from past generations is displayed everywhere. Rooms, though large, bright and comfortable, have fairly bland cottage-style decor. But there’s a lot to do on-site -- the hotel has three restaurants, a brewery and bakery, a fitness center, and three pools (including an adults-only option).
Location
Set atop a hill high above Stowe, with jaw-dropping views
The Trapp Family Lodge is located on a hill a few minutes’ drive from Stowe, boasting impressive views from most rooms and common areas. A narrow, winding road leads to Mountain Road, the main thoroughfare in the Stowe area. It is a busy road that can get congested, but it offers easy access both to downtown Stowe and the mountains. There are several excellent restaurants within a few minutes’ drive, and the jaw-dropping vistas from Smugglers’ Notch (closed in the winter) are a quick drive away. The tiny, slow-paced village of Stowe is probably the best base to explore the area. It has its share of urban amenities, such as unique shops, a movie theater, entertainment venues, and bars, plus one of the best dining scenes in New England. The actual downtown area is compact and quiet, but there’s always a lot going on here.- 55-minute drive to Burlington International Airport
