Bottom Line

The NH Laguna Palace is one of a handful of more modern hotels in Mestre, a commercial area in mainland Venice with much more reasonably priced properties than on the island. The hotel is popular with tour groups and business travelers and is made up of two buildings divided by a marina where water taxis are available. Rooms range from standards to suites, and those in the main building are the nicest. All come with air-conditioning and some have views of the marina. It’s worth comparing rates with the similarly modern Hotel Residence Elite, but unlike the Laguna Palace, it doesn't have a marina.

Scene

Sleek, modern, and businesslike

The massive structure has a modern glass- and brick-covered facade and a large glass roof with metal girders that links the hotel’s two buildings and covers the marina. The interiors have sleek wood-paneled walls and metal accents, and the lobby and restaurant are filled with tables topped with green glass and surrounded by leather mid-century-modern armchairs. The feeling is modern and corporate, and the hotel is particularly popular with business travelers.

Location

In a commercial area that's a short trip from the center of Venice

The hotel is located in an industrial-looking commercial area, with some small restaurants and bars nearby, but not much else for tourists. It sits on a canal, and guests can order a water taxi to the island of Venice directly from the property. Getting to the island is much cheaper via public transportation, though, and the Mestre train station is a 20-minute walk from the hotel -- from here, the train to Venice's Santa Lucia railway station takes less than 10 minutes. There’s also a bus stop a 10-minute walk away, and the bus to the island takes around 10 minutes.

Rooms

Spacious and stylish rooms, some with views of the marina

Most of the hotel’s 367 air-conditioned rooms are spacious and stylishly modern, filled with neutral colors and a mix of smooth light and dark woods. Dark marble bathrooms are similarly sleek and large, with glass-walled shower/tub combos. Amenities in all rooms include flat-screen TVs, minibars, safes, and hairdryers. Standard Rooms are the blandest of the lot, with gloomy gray carpeting and more plastic than wood. On the other end of the spectrum, Junior Suites are particularly plush and have separate sitting areas with desks and TVs as well as coffeemakers. Some rooms have views of the marina.

Features

Free breakfast, plus an on-site restaurant and massive conference center

The Laguna Restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and serves Italian and international cuisine. A free continental breakfast with some hot dishes is served on the restaurant's bright red bar, with fruit displayed unconventionally and plastic balls piled up inside clear tubes. The hotel also has a large conference center that can accommodate up to 750 people and Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Note that there's no gym or pool on-site.
