The Locanda Herion is a no-frills budget hotel with basic amenities, but it's got a great location in the Cannaregio district, near the Venetian Ghetto. The hotel's 12 rooms are simple but clean and comfortable with double beds, desks, TVs, mini-fridges, and modern en-suite bathrooms. Breakfast and Wi-Fi are both available, but both costs extra. Travelers looking for a budget hotel with a little more ambiance may prefer the Hotel Tre Archi, which also has a small, 24-hour bar and a free breakfast, though it's a bit farther from major attractions.
Scene
Clean, no-frills budget hotel
The Locanda Herion is a no-frills hotel with basic rooms and few extra property features, making it ideal for budget travelers looking for an affordable base in Venice. Once a residential building, the hotel was renovated in 2008, though you wouldn't know it from the outside. The three-story townhouse has a rustic brick and cream-colored facade that does little to help it stand out from nearby buildings. The lobby is pleasant enough, but basic, with a mix of furniture including a few antique pieces, marbled cafe tables that serve as spots for eating breakfast, and a small, office-like reception area. The only other shared spaces on the property are a courtyard and raised terraces that overlook terra-cotta rooftops and have mosaic tiled cafe tables, wrought-iron chairs, and potted plants. Note that there is no elevator.
Location
In the less touristy Cannaregio district near the Venetian Ghetto and railway station
In the northwestern part of Venice, Locanda Herion is situated on a quiet side street just a minute's walk from a main road in the popular Cannaregio district. While this isn't the main tourist area of Venice, the area is bustling and authentic, in walking distance to plenty of shops and restaurants. The Venetian Ghetto, Venice's Jewish quarter, is just around the corner, about a five-minute walk away, and the San Marcuola water bus stop takes the same amount of time to reach. It's an eight-minute walk to the train terminal (Venezia Santa Lucia), and about 50 minutes to Marco Polo Airport via water bus. It's about 20 minutes on foot or by water bus to Saint Mark's Square.
Rooms
Clean, basic rooms with en-suite bathrooms, TVs, and mini-fridges
The hotel's 12 air-conditioned rooms include Economy, Standard, and Superior Doubles in addition to a three-person Triple Room. While room design varies, the decor tends to be basic, with tiled floors, white walls, white- and brown-wood furniture, and coordinated comforters and drapes. Rooms are adequately sized and include small desks and chairs, wardrobes with safes, and flat-screen TVs, but no tea- and coffee-making facilities (typical in Venice). Rooms have mini-fridges, but some of them are tiny. Bathrooms are modern and compact, with tiled floors, bidets, and walk-in showers, plus hairdryers and individual toiletries. Towels and linens are changed every two days, with an extra charge for more frequent cleaning. Be aware that guests are not allowed to eat in the rooms.
Features
Pleasant outdoor terraces, but few extra property features, and fees for Wi-Fi and breakfast
The Locanda Herion's features are limited. The hotel's lobby doubles as a small indoor breakfast room, but guests generally prefer to sit outside in the courtyard or one of the hotel's pleasant terraces that overlook the courtyard and nearby rooftops. Breakfast is offered for a fee, and it includes a basic selection of bread, cheese, fruit, and cereal. Wi-Fi also costs extra.
