Bottom Line

The two-and-a-half-pearl Hotel Venezia caters to business travelers in the heart of Mestre. It's convenient for travelers with commitments in this urban center, but it's not the best base for tourists exploring Venice. However, rates are cheaper here than hotels on the historic island, which is about a 20-minute bus ride from the property. Its 100 guest rooms have traditional decor, and all come with AC, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi, but amenities are generally dated, and many units show wear. Other than several meeting rooms, facilities are limited to an elegant breakfast room and its adjoining garden patio. Cheaper rooms can be found at Hotel Delle Rose, and although it lacks style, it has a small outdoor patio and is closer to Venice.

Scene

Mid-range business hotel with classic Old World decor

Hotel Venezia, family-run since 1955, is something of a time capsule; a mid-century concept of 1800s Venetian elegance. Inside, an abundance of brass and gold accents set the tone. Pink granite floors and tufted, leather-like seating on built-in wood furniture make for a unique pairing. A wood-paneled reception desk is overshadowed by a maritime landscape painting, and the original mail-and-room-key cubicle in back is a rare vintage treat. Bronze statuettes, pretty blue globes, and gilded sconces complete the look. The hotel mostly attracts couples and friends traveling in groups, in addition to some business travelers.

Location

In central Mestre, a 20-minute bus ride from Venice

Hotel Venezia is located in the urban center of Mestre, surrounded by residential buildings and offices. The area is also packed with shops, bars, and supermarkets that cater to local residents, not tourists. Other restaurants and bars are within walking distance, and Piazza Ferretto, a public square with cafes and shops, is a three-minute walk away. Public buses to the island of Venice can take guests to the Piazzale Roma station in 20 minutes. Marco Polo International Airport is a 15-minute drive away.

Rooms

Classic rooms with flat-screen TVs; some have furnished balconies, but no kettles or mini-fridges

The hotel has 100 guest rooms done in traditional decor, with pink or pale green color schemes, floral-print bedspreads, and faux antique furniture. Walls are either painted or wallpapered, decorated with oil paintings and crown moulding. Most of the furniture has intentional patinas, but some is also worn down with age. Lighting and temperature controls are located on vintage panels, with switches and knobs from another era. Guest rooms have double or twin beds, small desks, and wardrobe closets, plus AC, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi, but kettles and mini-fridges are absent. Triple and Quadruple units are available, the former with a small seating area, and some rooms have private furnished balconies. The small, dated bathrooms have cramped vanities, bidets, and either walk-in showers or shower/tub combos.

Features

Limited amenities, but free breakfast, garden patio, event space, and free Wi-Fi

This hotel has slim amenities, with no full restaurant or bar. However, there's a free breakfast served in a classic room with wood beamed ceilings and 18th-century decor, with an adjoining lounge that has a unique, green lattice ceiling. Glass doors open to a bright, leafy garden patio with more seating at white metal tables and chairs. Five meeting rooms and a lounge with ornately decorated walls provide several on-site options for events. There's also free Wi-Fi throughout and on-site parking.
