Hotel Bisanzio

It's not everyday that travelers come across the chance to sleep in a 16th-century palace, and that's especially the case when you consider that this particular palazzo houses a BEST WESTERN. Much of the charm has been preserved here, and interiors include a handsome array of classic details, from exposed ceiling beams by the circular front desk to the two parlors with their Old-World Venetian vibe (think: walnut wainscoting, 18th-century-style furniture, and display cases of Murano glass). Venetian sculptor Alessandro Vittoria once used this palace as his workshop, and the Busetti family, who still own the property, opened the doors to travelers in 1969. This three-floor property wraps around a large stone courtyard with a well, adding an additional dash of throwback ambience. Sitting in a warren of Venetian brick streets, the property's central location and brand name is a major draw. The classic interiors -- which will likely appear dated to some travelers -- are clean and well kept, and the quiet vibe attracts plenty of vacationing couples and families.

Located in the Castello area of Venice, just beyond the official border of the San Marco neighborhood, the hotel has an enviable location in a central yet quiet area. The Riva degli Schiavoni waterfront promenade -- with restaurants, cafes, and bars -- is just a three-minute walk, at the end of the block. The city's most famous sight, Piazza San Marco and Basilica San Marco, are both a five-minute walk from the hotel. The Bridge of Sighs is visible along the way from the hotel to Piazza San Marco by walking along the waterfront. It's a 15-minute walk to the famous Rialto Bridge, and there are plenty of luxury shops in the middle of the San Marco area, a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Vaporetti are available on the Grand Canal at the end of the block. Tours of Murano Island via a free water taxi can be arranged through the hotel during limited hours, and from there, travelers can catch a boat to Burano Island. Venice Marco Polo airport is about an hour away by ferry, or about a 15-minute taxi ride from the parking lot on the mainland next to the train station (which takes 30 minutes to reach by boat).

Inspired by 18th-century Venetian decor, rooms have an undeniable charm that comes from a combination of Murano light fixtures, pale red and blue textiles, hardwood floors, and heavy antique furniture. Some rooms have additional details like exposed wood-beam ceilings, and top-floor rooms have slanted ceilings that give them a quaint, attic-like feel. The deliberately antiqued walls are hung with etchings of Venetian street life from throughout history. Modern touches include stocked minibars, air-conditioning, safes, electric kettles, and 40-inch flat-screen TVs. Rooms overlook the courtyard, streets, or rooftops. Superior Rooms -- which are larger than Single and Double Rooms -- include small sitting areas, and some also have terraces with flowers. Suites and apartments are also available and are located in an adjacent building. Suites have lofted bedrooms, bunk beds, and living rooms, and can sleep up to five people, while apartments offer kitchenettes with dishwashers and dining tables. The annex has no elevator, unfortunately. Private tiled bathrooms feature heated towels racks, bidets, hairdryers and shower/tub combos in most. 

Like most hotels in the bustling center of Venice, there aren't an abundance of features here. A free breakfast is a welcome addition, and the buffet options include hot and cold items like eggs, fresh fruit, and pastries. The ambience in the dining room is in harmony with the hotel’s classic design scheme, featuring Murano glass fixtures on the walls, large paintings, and exposed ceiling beams. There's also a small bar, and drinks can be enjoyed in two reading rooms that are traditionally furnished. One of the nicest touches at this hotel is the free water taxi that's available during limited hours to Murano Island -- check ahead on timings. A computer and a printer are available in one of the parlors. Front desk services are provided 24-hours a day with luggage storage available. Although the connection can be spotty, Wi-Fi is provided for free throughout the hotel.
