  • Excellently
positioned for exploring Venice's tourist center

stage for entry direct from canal

  • Classical
    Venetian-style decor in rooms

  • Many rooms
    overlook the canal

  • Simple breakfast
    included in rate

  • Free Wi-Fi throughout

Cons
  • Some small
    rooms and tiny bathrooms

  • Potentially
    difficult to find

  • Not easy access via public transport

  • No restaurant or bar (a common theme for small hotels in Venice)

Bottom Line

Hotel Becher is a
mid-range, 17-room, and largely typical canal-front property that veers little
from the norm for Venice hotels. The location is outstanding for getting around
the main attractions, and there are plenty of cafes within walking distance, though access via public transport is a little awkward. Rooms
are classical 18th century Venetian and, while some are on the small size, many
overlook the canal. Breakfast is included and offers a small selection of pastries and cold items. There's also a small but charming front patio area overlooking the San Luca canal. Rates are good for the location, but not great for the
caliber of hotel, so it's worth comparing prices with the nearby Hotel
Saturnia & International or AD Place Venice.

Scene

Inconspicuous, typical canal-front property with traditional interiors

Hotel Becher offers a mid-range hotel experience typical of Venice. Small and traditional, with 18th century Venetian-style decor, the hotel doesn't offer much space for mingling. Gondolas arrive at the candy cane striped poles indicating the entranceway, where a small patio area with a wood floor and neon green wall overlooks the canal. From there, guests enter the lobby and front desk area, also somewhat oddly decorated with bright green touches against typical checkered floors and classical white furnishings. The hallways, too, are traditional, with green floral wallpaper and chandeliers setting off plush red couches and red carpeting.

Location

Excellently positioned for exploring tourist attractions

Positioned roughly
between San Marco Square and the Rialto bridge in the district of Castello, the
hotel is particularly well located for exploring the tourist sights of Venice. Being
situated away from the Grand Canal, however, means getting to the hotel is most
easily done by water taxis as the nearest public vaporetto stop, San Marco, is a six minutes' walk -- a bit of a
distance with luggage. The surrounding area is a wonderful maze of
walkways, canals, and bridges as well as some of the city's finest dining and
shopping.

Rooms

Traditional Venetian-style decor with air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi

The hotel's 17
rooms are typical 18th century Venetian styling with ornately gilt trimmed
antique-style furnishings, damask patterned fabrics, and tasseled drapery. All
rooms have air-conditioning and come with minibars, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs
with satellite channels. Many rooms overlook the canal and some have balconies, though others have
very little in the way of views. Some are also on the small size with
particularly low ceilings and tiny bathrooms with either stall showers or shower/tub combos.

Features

Small breakfast room and tiny terrace overlooking the canal

A simple
breakfast of pastries and coffee is included in the room rate and served in the breakfast room
overlooking the canal -- traditionally styled with red carpeting and damask-patterned drapes, the room is very small and can get cramped. There is
also a small terrace, with a bench seat and two small glass tables with chairs, where guests can wait to be picked up from the hotel's
private landing stage, or just enjoy a drink while watching the gondolas go by. Wi-Fi is free throughout, and like most hotels in Venice, parking isn't available.
