Bottom Line

The Ca' San Giorgio is one Venice's most romantic bed and breakfasts. The property has just eight rooms inside a renovated convent steps away from the Grand Canal. Beyond the fabulous location, guests love the private terraces that overlook the city's famed canals. However, cramped spaces -- especially in the bathrooms and some of the public areas -- have caused complaints. And for travelers who prefer a selection of on-site amenities, note that the Ca' San Giorgio doesn't offer much beyond the free breakfast.

Scene

Intimate and romantic eight-room bed and breakfast

Located just a few steps from the Grand Canal in an eight-room restored convent, the romantic Ca' San Giorgio bed and breakfast is popular with honeymooners and couples. The suite on the top floor is especially sought-after for epic views of the canals. The lobby has high ceilings and wooden beams along with tiled floors and rock walls. The feel isn't quite gothic, but it's definitely moody and unique. A dining room where breakfast is served is much more traditional with dark blue carpets and gold drapery. A small courtyard is a nice spot for an espresso and people watching.

Location

In Santa Croce, just steps from the Grand Canal

Guests arriving via a water taxi from the Venice airport can expect a 25-minute boat ride that ends a few steps from the hotel's entrance. The surrounding neighborhood is quiet without much foot traffic, though that all changes once you walk a few minutes to a public park surrounded with restaurants, wine bars and shops. It's a 12-minute walk to the Rialto Bridge.

Rooms

Clean, with flat-screen TVs, small bathrooms, and dated decor

There are eight rooms inside the Ca' San Giorgio and each one is spotlessly clean, with classic furnishings (wooden desks, white striped sofas), though the overall feel is a bit dated. Room names are painted on opera masks attached to the exterior door of each room. Inside, white walls with crown molding are accented by deep blue wall-to-wall carpets and gold draperies on the windows. A mini-fridge is filled with beverages and glasses are made of locally hand-blown glass. Some of the bathrooms are on the smaller side and very basic with blue tiles and single sinks. It's worth the upgrade to book a room with a private balcony overlooking the canals. Some rooms have special extras such as wood beam ceilings and Murano glass chandeliers.

Features

Free breakfast, snacks, and not much else

Breakfast is included in the price of the room and guests rave about details like freshly squeezed orange juice and strong Italian coffee. However, there isn't much else in the way of public features at the bed and breakfast, though that's pretty common for historical hotels in Venice.
