Bottom Line

The 119-room Bauer Hotel is a convenient two-minute walk from St. Mark's Square in the heart of Venice. This exclusive Art Deco-influenced property has a grand lobby full of gold accents and chandeliers as well as traditionally decorated rooms with high ceilings and big, modern bathrooms. The hotel features a restaurant and two bars; Bar Canale has an outdoor terrace and Grand Canal views. There is nice variety in the daily breakfast buffet, but rooms lack tea or coffee facilities. Rates are typically lower at the nearby Hotel Saturnia, but the Bauer is arguably a bit more elegant.

Scene

A grand, opulent hotel with Art Deco style

The big, bright lobby makes a grand first impression, with its marble tile floors, decorative driftwood displays, gold accents, and chic tub chairs. The lobby also features a white and gold spiral staircase and a grand piano, and Venetian artwork throughout the common spaces adds character. Though the hotel first opened in 1880, the distinct façade dates to the 1940s and the interior style is Art Deco inspired. It's certainly opulent but its retro charm may not suit all tastes. Note that the hotel's pricier sister property, Bauer Il Palazzo, is housed in the same building and faces the canal, while the Bauer faces the Campo San Moise.

Location

On the Campo San Moise, near St. Mark's Square in the heart of Venice

The Bauer Hotel is located in an elegant area of Venice’s historic core, a short walk from St. Mark's Square and the city’s best shopping. All of the top attractions can easily be reached on foot. The elaborate Baroque Chiesa di San Moise is located on the same square as the hotel. Bar Canale, one of the two bars in the hotel, has a scenic terrace overlooking the Grand Canal.

Rooms

Traditionally elegant rooms with modern bathrooms

The rooms at Bauer Hotel have different styles and views. Some are decorated in soft colors with Italian frescoes over the beds while others are full of patterned wallpaper and patterned bedspreads. All have marble bathrooms (most large), minibars, and flat-screen TVs. High ceilings and long, dramatic drapes complete the look. Some rooms overlook the city; others have views of small canals.

Features

A bar with outdoor terrace overlooking the Grand Canal

The Bauer Hotel is full of high ceilings, marble, and opulent décor. This also extends to the restaurant and two bars. An outdoor terrace overlooking the Grand Canal is part of Bar Canale while live piano music is a highlight at B Bar. De Pisis Restaurant serves Asian-influenced Mediterranean fare. Breakfast is free, but there is a fee for Wi-Fi.
