Albergo Marin

Tucked behind a few other buildings in a somewhat secluded area, Albergo Marin maintains a quiet atmosphere despite its close proximity to a bustling train station. Couples flock to the three-story red stone building dotted with charming window boxes and fronted by a few wrought iron tables and chairs. Inside, the common areas are bright with natural light, and refreshingly devoid of the overly ornate decor of some Venetian properties. The lobby -- with clean white walls, stone floors, and colorful patterned rugs -- provides a welcoming space for guests to unwind with a book. Framed drawings of Venice line the walls from the lobby into the breakfast room, which has an inlaid pink ceiling with flock-patterned corners. In the small bar, clear barstools line a glass-topped, white stone bar illuminated by a neon green light -- a pleasant, if somewhat quirkily decorated, spot for a pre-dinner cocktail.

A few surrounding buildings help shield Albergo Marin from noise, though there isn't too much in this residential area dotted with cafes and bars. The hotel feels secluded from the tourist chaos, while being just a short walk from key transportation options -- the hosts offer tips on navigating the city when guests arrive. Santa Lucia train station is a five-minute walk away, the Piazzale Roma bus terminal is just over five minutes on foot from the hotel, and the San Stae vaporetto stop is a 10-minute walk. The Grand Canal is just a couple of minutes' walk from the hotel, while the Rialto Bridge and Saint Mark's Basilica are both about 20 to 25 minutes away on foot. 

Each of the rooms at Albergo Marin is air-conditioned, and has a safe and TV with satellite channels -- about half are flat-screen, while the rest are tube-style. All rooms except for one have private bathrooms, which are on the small side but nicely put-together with neutral tiling, ornate mirrors, and stall showers. Standard Rooms combine wood laminate wall paneling with sheer white curtains and somewhat dated, though cheerful, pale yellow bedding -- framed Klimt prints are a nice touch. Superior Rooms feel fresher, with light brown damask-patterned bedding and curtains, clean white walls, and plush black bed throws. Superior Rooms with hammam-style showers and aromatherapy oils are available. Note that "double beds" are two single beds pushed together.

The free daily breakfast includes an assortment of hot and cold items, including croissants, meats, and cheeses. Guests are greeted with a free drink and snack -- typically potato chips -- and drinks are available throughout the day and evening at the small on-site bar. A tea hour is offered during the winter months. In addition to the lobby, which has a TV and books for browsing, there is a lovely outdoor seating area at the front of the property where guests can take in the local scene. Wi-Fi is free throughout, and discounted parking is available at a nearby garage.
