The Victorian Hotel is a budget-friendly bed and breakfast that's comfortable but not as romantic or stylish as the name suggests. The hotel was originally built in 1898 as a Victorian brick building, and with 47 rooms it's definitely not a cozy inn, but more like a budget-friendly boutique hotel. Rooms are modern with hardwood floors and coffeemakers, but not all of them have private bathrooms. Continental breakfast and Wi-Fi are free. There's a small lobby with a fireplace and armchairs, but most guests spend their time exploring the nearby Gastown District.
Scene
Renovated Victorian building
From the outside, the Victorian Hotel has an impressive partial brick exterior with sculpted window details and small white balconies. Indoors, the Victorian theme isn't as evident and the space looks and feels more like a clean budget hotel than a bed and breakfast. There's a small living room area with modern gray armchairs and a gray rug over wooden floors. A map of the world hangs on the wall in a gold frame. The fireplace is a real highlight. Across the landing is the communal breakfast area set with wooden chairs and tables. Guests report that the space can get crowded and some guests bring their breakfast to their rooms.
Location
A few blocks from Gastown
The Victorian Hotel has an ideal location on a quiet street among historical Vancouver buildings, small shops, and family homes on Homer Street. It's only a few blocks to the Gastown district, which is known as the heart of Vancouver's urban culture and arts scene (along with many of the city's homeless shelters). There's a Skytrain station about a five-minute walk from the hotel, which means easy access to the airport and most destinations in Vancouver. The hotel doesn't provide parking but there's a private lot nearby.
Rooms
Modern and historic with some shared bathrooms
There are 47 rooms on three floors at the Victorian Hotel. The cheapest rooms don't have private bathrooms. Each room is a mix of modern furniture and technology and historical details that pay homage to the hotel's Victorian past. Most rooms have hardwood floors covered with Oriental-style rugs. Antique-style dressers with marble tops and upholstered ottomans look upscale. Beds get high marks for comfort and soft sheets. Flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi are nice touches. Some bathrooms are super modern with glass encased showers and square sinks, while others are more basic with shower/tub combinations. Lavender scented shampoo and conditioner are mounted to the wall. Views overlook the street. Half of the rooms are air-conditioned and there isn't an elevator to the third floor.
Features
Free breakfast and Wi-Fi
Like most boutique bed and breakfast properties, Victorian Hotel doesn't offer a lot of features. There's a free continental breakfast with croissants, yogurt, coffee, and cereals that guests can bring to their rooms. Wi-Fi is free throughout or guests can use the desktop computer and printer in the lobby. Check rates at Moda Hotel -- a boutique property with an Italian restaurant and wine bar -- if you must have more features.
