Sunset Inn and Suites is a budget-friendly property that was once private apartments and has now been renovated as an all-suite hotel without many features. For guests who want spacious apartments with full kitchens and balconies at a low rate while they explore Vancouver, it's hard to beat Sunset Inn. Freebies include parking, Wi-Fi, and continental breakfast. Still, there aren't any features aside from a tiny fitness center and past guests have complained about washing their own dishes after a serve-yourself breakfast that has to be brought back to the rooms on trays. The Days Inn Vancouver Downtown has a more central location and kitchenettes for around the same price.
Scene
'70s-style apartment building turned hotel
Sunset Inn and Suites has a dated looking multistory cement facade with orange and blue details. Cement stone planters hold small trees and flowers. Indoors, the lobby has a gas brick-lined fireplace and a small suede sofa topped with polka dotted pillows. There's a brochure rack and serve-yourself coffee machine (for a charge). Breakfast is served in a tiny, cramped hallway and there's no seating. Guests must take their waffles and cereal on a tray back to their suite, then wash their dishes in the room and return them back to the breakfast area. Many of the guests are groups of families.
Location
Residential street in downtown Vancouver
The hotel has an ideal location on a quiet residential street that's still close to the action in downtown Vancouver. The back of the hotel faces a large alley that also serves as the back entrance to many restaurants, so it can get busy and loud with deliveries. The front of the building is green and kept clean. Restaurants, Sunset Beach, and public transportation are all within a five- to 10-minute walk. There's also a water taxi to Granville Island. Gated parking is free here.
Rooms
Suites with kitchens and balconies
There are studios and one- or two-bedroom suites at the Sunset Inn and Suites, which used to be an apartment building. They can vary in terms of square footage, layout, and bed size but each is spacious with hardwood floors covered with Oriental-style rugs. Bedrooms are carpeted in some units. Beige wallpaper and neutral curtains don't add much color but large windows and furnished balconies let in a lot of light. All rooms have full kitchens with complete cooking gear, flat-screen TVs, and Blu-Ray players. Wi-Fi and ethernet Internet are free. Single sinks and shower/tub combinations make up the forgettable bathrooms. Neutrogena toiletries and a wall-mounted hairdryer are provided. Rooms facing the front of the hotel are quiet while back facing rooms look out on a noisy alley.
Features
Free parking, free Wi-Fi, and free breakfast
Features at the Sunset Inn and Suites are designed to keep costs low. Freebies include gated parking, Wi-Fi throughout, and coin-operated laundry machines with free soap. There's a room where guests can lock their bikes and over 300 DVD titles to borrow. Breakfast is free, but many guests report that it's cramped and low quality, though there is a waffle iron and coffee machine. A small gym is adjacent to the lobby. It holds three older cardio machines and a rack of free weights.
