Built in 2003, the Tryp Oceanic is a large building with almost 200 rooms. Despite its size, it has a relaxed, easygoing atmosphere and easily caters to all types of travelers. The spacious lobby is bright and furnished with an assortment of colorful leather sofas and chairs, in addition to simple wooden tables. Corridors are large with a basic, unpretentious design. But given that the hotel is surrounded by impressive architectural buildings, the Tryp doesn't seem to measure up, especially in terms of decor. On most days the hotel is filled with families congregating at the outdoor pool, which can make it feel rather crowded; the overflow of guests often spills out onto the grass. Though it's somewhat private, the pool is otherwise open to the elements and not exactly relaxing with the sounds of the city just outside the gated barrier. There are great views of the city from the roof (where the gym is located). The ride to the top, in the glass enclosed elevator, is itself worthwhile.

The main appeal of the Tryp Oceanic is its bustling location adjacent to a shopping center and various restaurants for families and everyday tourists. The complex bends around an old river bed and is within walking distance of all the main attractions, like the City of Arts and Sciences (a masterpiece by the Spanish architect Calatrava) and the Oceanographic Park. The immediate area bursts with life: families, joggers, dogs -- all of whom are surely drawn to the beautiful gardens and parks. Public transportation is easily accessible: the #19 bus reaches the beach and city center, and the Ayora Metro Station is a direct line to the airport. Cyclists can explore the many trails, as well. The hotel is a good 10 minutes from the city center by taxi, or guests can walk 30 to 40 minutes along a scenic path to the old town. By car, the beautiful beaches of El Saler, located in a natural reserve, are about 20 minutes away.

Like the rest of the hotel, rooms are simple in terms of decor. Standard Rooms are no frills with simple white bedding and light wood bed frames, while Family Rooms have bunk beds and pillows with cartoons on them. All rooms are equipped with a small refrigerator, microwave, and minibar. In general, rooms are decently sized, though furniture and artwork are a bit lacking in quality. Walls aren't soundproof and rooms near the elevator tend to be noisier. Bathrooms are spacious with earthy granite fixtures and heat lamps. Higher floor rooms have large terraces with city views and and sun-beds.

The Tryp Oceanic has a good selection of well-kept amenities that are on the small side. There's a medium-size outdoor pool -- guests sometimes spill over onto the adjacent lawn to sunbathe. The 24-hour fitness center isn't large either, but has city views from its rooftop perch. The health center has a nice Finnish sauna, while the small but pleasant business center has two computers back-to-back. The rooftop solarium is a nice perk, and the ride to the top of the hotel in the glass-enclosed elevator is a treat. Families are welcome, and the hotel is a popular choice for children's parties. The breakfast buffet offers a good range of hot and cold dishes, and the on-site restaurant serves Mediterranean cuisine. Pool towels are provided but a deposit at reception is required. Shoppers will appreciate El Cortes Inglese next door and the nearby shopping mall.
