While the upper-middle-range NH Valencia Center is technically in the center of the city, few of the main tourist sights are within walking distance, but the main bus station and a metro stop are nearby. Its 192 rooms show a design flair, with sharp-edged, dark-wood furniture and pale walls. They include minibars, safes, and free Wi-Fi. But the rest of the property, built in 1996, has begun to show its age. The hotel has a fitness center with weight and cardio machines, and a rooftop pool with lounge chairs and views of the skyline. There's also a business center and seven function rooms. Travelers interested in staying in the newer section of Valencia should check out the Tryp Oceanic Valencia, which has comparable amenities and rates.
Scene
A contemporary chain hotel that's starting to show its age
Built in 1996, the NH Valencia Center, while contemporary and well-maintained, has started to show its years. The boxy cream-and-pale-green-stone facade has faded a bit in the sun. Inside, light-wood panels temper the high-polished look of the dated green-marble. The cafe is an updated take on space-age style. The rooftop terrace has elegant deck furniture, and the blue-tile rooftop pool has an Astroturf deck. Both rooftop spaces offer skyline views of Valencia -- some of the city's legendary landmarks can be seen in the distance. Many of the meeting rooms have blond-wood paneling and black chairs, which while pleasant, is hardly memorable. The hotel attracts a mix of couples, families, and business travelers.
Location
In the Campanar District, on the northwest side of central Valencia
NH Valencia Center's location is well connected to public transportation, a two-minute walk to Valencia's main bus station. But the Campanar District, where it's located, isn't particularly scenic. A strip mall with shops and restaurants and a couple of parks are within a five-minute walk. About a 12-minute walk from the hotel is Jardín de las Hespérides, a beautiful green space inspired by Greek mythology. Valencia's Institute of Contemporary Art, which is housed in a 13-century convent, is about a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Other sights and attractions, such as the Valencia Cathedral, are about a 15-minute drive or 25-minute trip on public transportation. Depending on the final destination, Valencia's historic Old Town is about the same distance away. Downtown Valencia -- the commercial area -- is about a 20-minute drive or a 40-minute trip on public transportation The nearest metro station to the hotel is about an eight-minute walk away, but some destinations are easier to reach by bus. Valencia Airport is about a 25-minute drive or a 40-minute trip on public transportation from the hotel.
Rooms
Rooms with sleek, contemporary furniture and modern bathroom fixtures, plus minibars and safes
In contrast to the somewhat dated common areas, the guest rooms show contemporary designer flair, with dark-wood headboards and desks, and beds that are big and plush. Details like plaid-print armchairs and chrome-leg end tables add a bit of polish, as do the amenities, which include minibars, safes, and free Wi-Fi. Superior Rooms and Suites add coffeemakers and bathrobes. Suites have separate sleeping, dining, work, and entertainment areas -- it's an open-floor plan but the sections are well defined. Bathrooms have shower/tub combos and modern fixtures. Suites have larger bathrooms, with small hallways housing the sinks and mirrors, and separate stalls for the toilets. Cribs are available, and the hotel can arrange babysitting for a fee.
Features
Fitness center and rooftop pool, a restaurant, and meeting rooms
The NH Valencia Center has several nice features that add to its value as an affordable hotel. The rooftop deck pool, while not huge, is large enough for a refreshing dip and offers lounge chairs and great views of Valencia. The fitness center has a selection of weight and cardio machines, a sauna, and tanning bed. Bikes can also be rented for those who like to sightsee on two wheels. The Center Restaurant serves Mediterranean and international cuisines, although guests rate it merely average. The breakfast buffet, on the other hand, which is available for a fee, scores high. Center Bar-Cafe serves burgers, drinks, and dessert. The business center offers photocopying and fax services, and the meeting facilities include seven function rooms that can fit up to 300 people. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
