Bottom Line

The mid-range Montaneros Condominiums offers a great location for skiers in the heart of Lionshead Village. Eagle Bahn Gondola is a short walk away, and bustling, touristy Vail Square is outside the hotel's front door. Amenities are limited compared to full-service hotels, with no fitness center, restaurant, bar, or breakfast. But it offers a large heated outdoor pool and two whirlpools that are open year-round, free covered parking, a laundry room, and ski equipment storage. Its 38 one- to four-bedroom residence-style condos are spacious and feature fully equipped kitchens, fireplaces, and balconies, though the individually owned units vary in decor and upkeep. Rates are competitive, given the property's desirable location. Travelers looking for a stay with a gym and sauna can consider the nearby Antlers at Vail.

Scene

Classic mountain setting with contemporary, cozy interiors for families

This is a quiet, family-oriented condo complex in the heart of all the action in Lionshead Village and Vail Square. It has a small but handsome lobby, with a cozy seating area in front of a fireplace and a wall-mounted flat-screen TV. Wood laminate floors and contemporary art give it a more modern feel than its classic, mountain chalet-style exterior, surrounded by tall pine trees. With no restaurant or breakfast room, there isn't much of an opportunity to mingle, but guests take advantage of the outdoor pool and whirlpools.

Location

In Lionshead Village, a three-minute walk to ski lifts

Montaneros is located in the heart of Lionshead Village, with Vail Square outside its front door. Ski rental shops, liquor stores, groceries, and a great choice of restaurants and bars are all within a short walk. The Eagle Bahn Gondola also is just a three-minute stroll. The free shuttle that runs between Lionshead and Vail Village stops in front of the hotel, taking riders to Vail in less than 10 minutes. It’s a four-minute drive to the Colorado Ski & Snowboard Museum, and Ford Amphitheater is seven minutes away by car.  Driving to Denver International Airport takes a little more than two hours.

Rooms

Spacious and individually decorated, with fully equipped kitchens and fireplaces

Condos range from one-bedroom units with one bathroom to four-bedrooms with three bathrooms. They're individually owned, and consequently they can vary in decor and upkeep. Most past guests say their condos were clean and well-maintained, but some of the units are a bit dated. All come with balconies, fully equipped kitchens, and gas fireplaces. The one-bedroom we saw on our summer 2017 visit was modern, with a simple but pleasant style. Walls were painted in light earth tones, handsome wood paneling framed the entrance and fireplace, and floors were covered with beige carpet. The living room was a cozy, contemporary space with a sofa and daybed, and vintage framed posters added pops of color. The condo was bright, with large windows and sliding glass doors leading out to the balcony, which had seating and a gas grill. Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, DVD players, robes, slippers, safes, and free Wi-Fi. The bathroom was also simple but spacious and had a shower/tub combo and Aveda bath products. Most condos overlook the pool and village and have at least partial mountain views.

Features

Year-round heated outdoor pool and whirlpools, guest laundry room, and free Wi-Fi

This condo complex's top feature is its spacious outdoor heated pool and two whirlpools that are open year-round. Amenities are enhanced during ski season, with the addition of a grocery shopping and delivery service and an equipment room that has boot dryers, but the property doesn't have a restaurant, bar, or fitness center on-site. There is a business center with a computer and printer, a guest laundry room, and valet dry cleaning and laundry service. A nice lineup of freebies includes coffee, hot chocolate, and newspapers in the lobby, a lending library (and DVD rental) at the front desk, parking in the complex's underground garage (but limited to one space per condo), and Wi-Fi throughout.
