The three-pearl Broken Spur Inn is an affordable hotel with a distinctive Western theme, located a little more than a five-minute drive from Capitol Reef National Park. Facilities are extensive -- an indoor pool, hot tub, and fitness center -- and the hotel also features a well-regarded steakhouse and ample, high-quality hot breakfast buffet. The 50 spacious guest rooms have a muted and tasteful Western look, and all come with AC, flat-screen TVs with DirecTV, plus mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi. Capitol Reef Resort is right at the entrance to Capital Reef and offers cabins, teepee, and covered wagon accommodations, but it doesn’t have an indoor pool and breakfast isn’t included in all bookings.
Scene
Charming Western decor, and guests hit the indoor pool and steakhouse
The Broken Spur Inn is situated on well-landscaped grounds with a horse statue and patio with picnic tables. The hotel’s owners also manage a cattle ranch, so they’ve decorated the public spaces with a charming (some might say kitschy) Western look, with saddles, mounted antlers and horns, Western artifacts, and Western-themed paintings and photography. The hotel also displays and sells locally made artwork depicting the surrounding area and parks. American and international leisure travelers tend to make up the bulk of clientele, and families with kids benefit from the indoor pool and playground. The Broken Spur Inn and its steakhouse are closed for the winter, from approximately mid-November through February.
Location
A five-minute drive from Capitol Reef National Park
Broken Spur Inn is located off Utah State Route 24, just east of Highway 12. A sandwich shop and gas station are just down the hill from the hotel, and a few shops and restaurants are in the center of Torrey, about a two-minute drive away. A large number of outdoor points of interest are in the area. Capitol Reef National park is a little more than a five-minute drive, with its visitor center about 15 minutes away by car. The Hickman Natural Bridge and Capitol Dome rock formations in the park are both a little more than a 15-minute drive. Coleman Reservoir is roughly a 30-minute drive, and both Goblin Valley State Park (featuring mushroom-shaped rock pinnacles) and Boulder Mountain (with scenic red-rock cliffs and canyon views) are 90 minutes away by car. Salt Lake City International Airport is the closet major airport, and it’s three hours and 30 minutes away by car from the hotel.
Rooms
Spacious Western-style rooms with DirecTV, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi
The spacious and handsome guest rooms at the Broken Spur Inn are done in a warm beige, tan, brown, and rust color palette, with wood furniture and headboards, and bed quilts with Western-themed design. All 50 units feature air-conditioning, 32-inch flat-screen TVs with DirecTV and over 100 channels, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi. Microwaves are available upon request, and suites with living areas are also available. Bathrooms are designed with a separate vanity, and all come with hairdryers and shower/tub combos (Suite tubs are jetted).
Features
Indoor pool and hot tub, small fitness corner, free hot breakfast, and steakhouse
The Broken Spur offers a solid range of amenities. The 10-meter heated indoor pool and hot tub are situated in a separate wood-walled pool house with an atrium ceiling and big windows to let natural light in. There's also a fitness corner with a couple of cardio machines at one end of the indoor pool room. Breakfast is another highlight, which comes included in the room rate and features a tasty spread of scrambled eggs, country potatoes, sourdough pancakes, hot meats, and a wide array of cold items. The on-site steakhouse specializes in steaks, seafood, and pasta, and gets excellent reviews from previous guests. Desserts are made fresh in the on-site bakery. The dining room offers superb views of the surrounding area from the hotel’s hilltop location. Other amenities include an on-site gift shop, a lobby business corner, coin-op laundry, a small playground, and free parking. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel. The hotel has no elevator, so guests with limited mobility should request a ground-floor room.
