Bottom Line

The Best Western Plus Zion West Hotel offers a good overall value for tourists who don’t mind driving 30 minutes to visit Zion National Park. The pet-friendly, lower-middle-range property is located in La Verkin, a peaceful small town with only a few restaurants. Opened in late 2014, the handsome chain hotel offers a free hot breakfast, outdoor pool/whirlpool, fitness center, laundry room, and free parking and Wi-Fi. Pets are welcome for a surcharge. Rooms are clean and well equipped with microwaves, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and lovely marble showers. Suites with sleeper sofas and whirlpool tubs are also available. Rates are lower than at many hotels in bustling Springdale (near Zion’s entrance), but the Majestic View Lodge just outside of Springdale is a good alternative with comparable rates and a steakhouse.

Scene

A peaceful tourist chain hotel that opened in late 2014

This handsome chain hotel (that opened in late 2014) hosts many tourists and outdoor adventurers who don’t mind driving around 30 minutes to visit Zion National Park. The three-story, tan stucco property makes a good first impression with natural stone pillars and nice landscaping. It stands alone in an isolated area, so it’s peaceful. Inside, the natural stone-framed reception desk faces a burnt orange wall that soars two stories high. Lovely polished tile mixes with wood laminate flooring to make a classy statement. A cluster of sofas and overstuffed armchairs in orange, green, and beige encircle a gas fireplace with a flat-screen TV hanging above it. Photos of Zion remind guests of the spectacular scenery that awaits them at the nearby national park. Overall, the hotel offers a relaxed and inviting atmosphere that most travelers find comfortable.

Location

In La Verkin, a 30-minute drive from Springdale and Zion National Park

The hotel is situated in La Verkin, a small and somewhat isolated town that’s 15 minutes from Interstate 15 and roughly a 30-minute drive from Springdale and the south entrance to Zion National Park. The hotel stands alone, but a convenience store and gas station are across the street, and a coffee shop is two minutes away on foot. A full-service restaurant is a one-minute drive or 12-minute walk but otherwise, there’s little in the way of dining and entertainment options in the immediate area. Hurricane has several restaurants and hotels that are just a five-minute drive away, however. St. George is a 30-minute drive, and Las Vegas and Bryce Canyon National Park are approximately two hours away by car.

Rooms

Clean and fresh -- with microwaves, mini-fridges, and marble showers

These rooms debuted in late 2014 and they remain clean, modern, and fresh. They’re tastefully decorated in a classy color combination of rust, brown, butterscotch, and burnt orange on the accent walls, patterned carpet, bed throws, and padded headboards. The drapes are a colorful mix of shimmery gray, red, and gold. Duvets are bright white and wood furniture has an espresso finish. Photos of spectacular Southwestern scenery enhance the look. The rooms are comfortably sized but not overly spacious; Standard Double Queens a bit tight. But, units offer enough space for desks with office chairs and armchairs wedged into one corner. Larger, studio-style Suites with sleeper sofas are available, as are two-room Suites with whirlpool tubs in the bedroom areas. Standard amenities include microwaves, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, 40-inch flat screen TVs, safes, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are quite nice, with laminate wood floors, black granite vanities with raised basin sinks, and shower/tub combos framed by lovely gray marble. Hairdryers and toiletries are provided. Views of the distant mountains from some rooms are scenic.

Features

Free hot breakfast, convenience store, and heated outdoor pool

This hotel has a lot of attractive amenities for a budget property, including a free breakfast buffet that features eggs, waffles, and other hot dishes. There's no restaurant or bar, but a small convenience store sells snacks, sundries, and souvenirs, and vending machines provide snacks and soft drinks. The heated outdoor pool has adequate space for a swim and an adjacent whirlpool. Some loungers and covered tables are placed nearby. The fitness center is open 24/7 and includes three pieces of modern cardio equipment and a universal strength-training machine. The business center provides two computers and a printer, along with a small conference table in a dedicated space. Wi-Fi is free. The guest laundry room has two coin-operated washer/dryer sets. Parking is free on the hotel’s surface lot. Pets are welcome with a surcharge.
