Bottom Line

This abandoned nunnery, built in 1275 for a community of Benedictines, has been fully restored as a luxury hotel and spa with a sophisticated modern aesthetic throughout. The baths and spa are the main attraction, and are based around a series of pools that wend around the architectural foundations of the building. Limestone walls and columns combine with discreet LEDs and the light from ambient skylights for a truly special experience. A walled garden isolates the property from the rest of the town, while the hotel's location within Assisi means that all points of cultural interest in the city are easily accessible by foot.

Scene

A gorgeously renovated convent popular for elegant getaways, both romantic and otherwise

This convent has been completely renovated; the interior aesthetic marries the elegance of local light stone with the sleek lines of minimalist design and such materials as glass and leather. While families are welcome at the hotel, which provides an excellent point from which to explore the historically significant town, children 12 and under are not allowed in the spa, making this an especially popular destination with adults.

Location

In the center of Assisi, a medieval city built on a hill in central Italy, about a 30-minute drive from Perugia

The town’s medieval art and architecture masterpieces have made it a world heritage site; many locations of interest not immediately inside Assisi are within a day hike or a short car ride of the Nun Assisi Relais, including Saint Francis of Assisi’s habitual retreat, the Eremo delle Carceri, a few kilometers from town. The Basilica of San Francesco is a stroll across town. The hotel itself is quiet, as it is set within a walled garden, and sits at the highest point in the city; expect steep climbs during walks through the city streets.

Rooms

The 18 suites are sleek and modern, with a few historic touches

The rooms offer a striking contrast to the historic architecture of the baths; all have been outfitted with a minimalist aesthetic, while preserving elements of the original architecture to varying degrees, such as religious wall frescoes and wood beam ceilings. Whitewashed floors, replicas of midcentury modern furniture, and glass partitions combine with stone walls, heavy wood doors, and terracotta floors. All rooms are outfitted with small flat-screen TVs and LED reading lights.

Features

Spectacular underground baths in Roman style

The spa has been designed to approximate the wellness regime practiced by the ancient Romans; besides the pool and hot tub, four sauna rooms are named Tepidarium, Calidarium, Sudatorium and Frigidarium, after their decreasing ambient temperatures and subsequent respective effects on the body. A full array of spa services is on offer at additional cost. Limestone columns surround the main pool, which feels like a real getaway as a result of the lofty architecture. Children 12 and under are not allowed in the spa. The in-house restaurant continues the historic-meets-modern aesthetic and offers traditional fare made with local ingredients.
