Built on the foundations of a medieval building and opened in 1899, the Giotto Hotel & Spa blends in well with medieval Assisi. Named for the Italian painter and architect Giotto di Bondone -- who painted several large frescoes at the nearby Basilica of St. Francis -- it's a visually appealing hotel, with an elegant lobby, dark woodwork, and classic decor in a red-and-gold palette. Perhaps due to its central hilltop location, the Giotto draws mostly tourists, including tour groups, but a small smattering of business travelers also stay at the hotel on occasion.

Giotto Hotel is nestled in the heart of medieval Assisi, about a three-minute walk from the famed Basilica of St. Francis. St. Clare Basilica and San Rufino Cathedral are also less than a 10-minute walk from the hotel.The Assisi train station, Basilica of Santa Maria Deglia Angeli, and Porziuncola Chapel are about two miles southwest of the Giotto Hotel & Spa Assisi, so guests can either drive or take a nice walk. Perugia San Franceso D'assisi-Umbria International Airport is about a 20-minute car ride away, and Perugia is just slightly further (about 25 to 30 minutes) in the same direction.

They all have flat-screen TVs with digital channels, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi.Views of the lush Umbrian Valley and the surrounding towns of Perugia and Spoleto can be seen from most of the rooms; other rooms overlook Assisi's medieval alleys.
