Scene

Rustic and romantic in a pastoral medieval setting

The beguiling Castello di Petrata is deeply rooted in medieval history. Set among olive groves five miles outside Assisi, the Castello was built in 1340 as a manor. It was converted into a fortress at the end of the 15th century to protect the Sperelli family against a rival family. A thorough renovation in 1996 produced the current stone country house. The 23 rooms on three floors are rustic but comfortable, and some have wood beams and exposed stonework. Guests can enjoy views of the Umbrian Valley as they swim in the big freeform outdoor pool and soak in the outdoor spa tub. A walk around the 20-acre grounds reveals many delights, including olive groves, gardens, and orchards. Those in the mood for more vigorous activities can play tennis, bocce, or go mountain biking and horseback riding. The indoor spa has a romantic feel with its hot tub with miniature waterfalls and candlelight.

Location

An idyllic rural location, about a 15-minute drive from Assisi

About five miles to Assisi and the Basilica of St. Francis, the Castello offers its guests a quiet, pastoral setting. The Castello offers free bike rentals, and it's possible to pedal to town. The Assisi train station, Basilica of Santa Maria Degli Angeli, and Porziuncola Chapel are 5.5 miles southwest of the Castello. Mount Subasio is eight miles south, while the Perugia San Francesco d'Assisi–Umbria International Airport is 10 mileswest.

Rooms

Rustic and charming but with free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs

The three-floor Castello has 16 rooms and seven suites. Junior suites are 345 to 410 square feet, and larger suites are 570 square feet to 690 square feet. Rooms receive lots of natural sunlight, come in colors of blue, gold, red, and rose, and offer views of the valley, swimming pool, or medieval Assisi. Some rooms have wood beams and exposed medieval stonework. Amenities include free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs with DVD players and satellite channels, including CNN. Bathrooms have either tubs or showers, and some rooms have sofas and outdoor decks with sun beds. While the rooms couldn't be called luxurious, they are attractive, comfortable, and filled with character.

Features

A wealth of activities, a spa, a view-ready freeform pool, and a restaurant

Guests won't lack for things to do at the Castello, nestled on a lush 20-acre property with olive groves, gardens, and an 18-station fitness trail. Activities include mountain biking, horseback riding (fees may apply), tennis (one court), archery, painting and cooking classes, nearby golf, and more. The 460-square-foot freeform outdoor pool and the outdoor spa tub offer superb views of the verdant Umbrian Valley. Guests can head indoors for another spa soak in a romantic setting with travertine stone, miniature waterfalls, soft lighting, and candlelight. A hammam steam bath, sauna, massages and treatments (for a fee) are also available. The restaurant offers a breakfast buffet (for a fee), and also serves lunch and dinner, featuring local specialties. There's also a bar/lounge with billiard tables.
