Saturnia Tuscany Hotel’s chateau-style building and small but well-designed spa are with easy reach of the Saturnia baths. The upscale hotel offers a clean, well-maintained and relaxing location from which to explore the nearby waterfalls and spas, and, further afield, several picturesque towns. While the hotel has its own spa, many guests have commented on its modest size; Terme di Saturnia, a considerably larger resort with thermal baths and its own set of spa offerings, is just down the road. Saturnia Tuscany’s own restaurant is widely considered good, and has gluten-free options upon request.
Scene
An elegant Tuscan house set among the rolling hills outside Saturnia, perfect for romantic getaways
An ideal location for a romantic getaway or jumping off point for countryside adventures, Saturnia Tuscany Hotel appeals in particular to couples and families seeking an especially bucolic retreat, since it is set in the middle of a field. The building, designed by the well-known Italian architect Paolo Portoghesi, mimics the structure of a chateaux-like Tuscan farm; its relatively recent construction (in 2011) means modern, if slightly bland, fixtures and furnishings throughout. The restaurant’s outdoor patio is a particular attraction, as is the large outdoor swimming pool overlooking the hills.
Location
Set slightly outside the main cluster of Saturnia resorts, about three kilometers from the famous baths
Saturnia Tuscany Hotel’s pastoral location near the township’s famed thermal baths allows for spectacular views of the countryside; it is situated up in the hills and a five-minute drive from the spa complex. The hotel sits within one kilometer (a 15-minute walk) of several good restaurants in the village of Poggio Murella, which is convenient as some guests have noted that the on-site restaurant can be expensive. The road leading to the spa may be in poor condition; caution is advised, particularly driving at night. Several towns of cultural and historical interest, including Pitigliano, Sorano and Sovana, are all within a 45-minute car ride.
Rooms
Rustic charm characterizes clean rooms and apartments
The smallest rooms here are pretty and simple, with stall showers and few frills. Large and some mid-size rooms have a terrace. All rooms have central air and small TVs, as well as homey, country-style decor (terracotta tile floors, white wood furniture, and in the larger suites, wrought iron four-poster beds). The hotel also offers six small apartments for those traveling in larger groups; these are equally pleasant, but have associated fees such as air-conditioning and room cleaning that are mandatory and not included in the base price.
Features
Beautifully designed, modestly sized spa with full array of services
Two jacuzzis, a handful of lounge chairs, and hot and dry saunas are laid out attractively in close proximity on the ground floor of the hotel; an unheated saltwater pool outside affords unobstructed vistas of the surrounding landscape. The indoor facilities are pleasantly furnished with wood benches and light tiles throughout and are clean, if a bit aseptic in their aesthetics. Reservations are not required for the spa, which means the facilities can get quickly crowded. A full range of spa services include aromatherapy, shiatsu, and facials. The restaurant, La Chianina Pescatrice, while on the pricier side, has received generally positive reviews from guests.
