La Gustea Hotel & Cucina is a family-run, 10-room budget hotel located in the small Tuscan village of Sarteano, which is convenient for exploring the surrounding Tuscan and Umbrian wine regions. In late 2017, the hotel refreshed its small guest rooms, replacing frumpy and dated decor with a bright and perky look. All rooms come with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi, and four units have balconies overlooking the town's medieval tower. The atmosphere is like that of an Italian home, drawing loyal returning guests, most of whom are from other parts of Italy. A free breakfast is served daily, and some rate packages include dinner in the casual restaurant and bar, which was also given a face lift at the end of 2017.
Scene
Family-run budget hotel popular with Italian couples and families
The family-run La Gustea Hotel & Cucina feels like someone's home, and the hosts go out of their way to make sure their guests feel like they can kick their feet up. The 10 rooms and adjacent restaurant/breakfast area all received a face lift in late 2017, replacing an unstylishly budget-basic look with a colorful and fresh one. Outdoors there's a large gazebo with hardwood floors and cushioned black patio furniture; in the warmer months, it's a pleasant spot for alfresco dining. But guests tend not to lounge around here all day -- the hotel is more of a home base for exploring the area.
Location
In the Tuscan village of Sarteano, close to hot springs and a medieval castle
La Gustea Hotel & Cucina is ideally situated as a home base for exploring Tuscany and Umbria's major wine regions. The small village of Sarteano itself has little of note besides its thermal hot springs and medieval castle -- that is, aside from its picturesque beauty. Wine regions such as Montalcino, Chianti, the Val d'Orcia, and Montepulicano are all within about an hour's drive, and towns like Orvieto and San Gimignano are also within day-trip distance. The hotel offers free parking.
Rooms
Bright and basic, with air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi
Renovated in 2017, the 10 rooms at La Gustea Hotel & Cucina are small, but clean and homey. All are done in cheery hues, mostly shades of peachy yellow, cobalt blue, and bright green. Some rooms are large enough to accommodate a delicate wooden desk in addition to the standard large wooden armoire. And four of the rooms have small balconies and views over the surrounding countryside and the town's medieval castle. Others have extra beds to accommodate families and groups. All have flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning as well as ceiling fans, and free Wi-Fi, and most have tea-making facilities. Bathrooms are tiny but modern, with hardwood floors, white marbled tile walls, and walk-in rainfall showers. Be aware that noise does travel through the house.
Features
Free breakfast; home-style restaurant and bar
The pension-style La Gustea Hotel & Cucina offers a free daily breakfast of homemade baked goods, eggs, bacon, and espresso. At night, the restaurant and bar area opens for dinner (included in certain room rates). Additional property features include a guest living room area, a meeting room, and an outdoor gazebo. There's a laptop for guests to use, and free Wi-Fi throughout most of the property.
