Bottom Line

La Bandita Townhouse is a 12-room boutique hotel housed in an old convent, right in the center of Pienza, a small village in the province of Siena. The townhouse has modern, stylish, minimalist rooms and great food, but it has neither a pool nor spa. Guests who don't mind being in a more remote location and who want a pool might prefer the hotel's similarly priced sister property, named simply La Bandita, which is a 20-minute drive away via a long bumpy road.

Scene

A former convent made contemporary

La Bandita is housed in a former convent on a narrow medieval street with a simple and austere facade, exposed bricks, stones, and beams, and a medieval walled garden in the back. The interiors, in contrast, are modern and contrastingly minimal. There's a library with an honor bar on the first floor decorated with the music awards given to one of the owners, a former Sony Music exec.

Location

In Pienza, on a narrow cobblestoned road

La Bandita Townhouse is in the main street of Pienza, a narrow cobblestone lane lined with restaurants and shops that leads to the piazza and its Renaissance cathedral. Cars are prohibited from entering the center of Pienza, but there are parking areas immediately outside the town's walls. The region is world-famous for its wines -- the cellars of Montepulciano and Montalcino are a 20- to 30-minute drive away. Siena is an hour's drive.

Rooms

Modern minimalist decor with street or countryside views

Modern minimalist decor adds contemporary flair to the ancient rooms, which retain some original features such as exposed stone walls and white-painted wood beams. Rooms have modern furniture in gray and orange, plush white bedding, elegant modern bathrooms with wood floors and big showers (as well as tubs in Superior Rooms), and Ortigia-brand toiletries. Guest rooms look out on narrow streets or on the Val D’Orcia countryside. All the rooms have a Illy-brand coffeemakers, but no kettles (although kettles are available in the communal library).

Features

Free breakfast, Wi-Fi, and a gourmet restaurant

La Bandita Townhouse has a restaurant and wine bar (The Townhouse Caffe), which is open to the general public. A free continental breakfast is also served here. The tables have a view of the open kitchen for guests who want to interact with the gourmet chef while he prepares meals. Guests can also take their meals out on the small terrace, and children under the age of five eat for free (assuming they are staying at the hotel). Wi-Fi is free, and guests staying for longer than three nights can have their laundry done free of charge.
