Occupying an 18th-century villa wrapped by vineyards, Hotel Villa Campomaggio Resort & Spa is an upscale property set a short drive from the village of Radda. Scenic settings and terrace wine tastings make it a popular pick for vacationing couples, and large oil paintings in the 20 rooms add romantic touches. They have classically elegant decor, as well as flat-screen TVs, hairdryers, and minibars. Manicured gardens nestle an outdoor pool, and a lovely spa has the works. Valley views are beautiful from most rooms and terraces, and al fresco dining is popular. Buffet breakfasts are free, but not having a restaurant limits guests to the bar's light meals. Travelers looking for somewhere less remote should consider the downtown Palazzo Leopoldo.
Scene
Historic, boutique hotel with romantic charm and beautiful views
Stunning views of Chianti's rolling countryside make for an immersive stay here, both indoors and out. The yellow-stucco facade is attractive, but even more atmospheric on rear terraces, where castle-like stone structures embrace the estate's 1776 origins. Interiors are classically elegant, but not pretentious. Lounges have brown-leather seating, splashes of color from modern rugs and throw pillows, and charming decor accents like a globe, wall clocks, and gilded artwork. The entryway has gorgeous painted vaulted ceilings with exposed brick. Outdoor terra-cotta terraces for lounging or dining are lovely spots to take in the surrounding hills. Think quintessential Italian elegance here, which primarily appeals to couples.
Location
Amid Chianti vineyards, near Radda
Vineyards, olive groves, and countryside horizons are beautiful here, but the remote location isn't for everyone. A vehicle is recommended, although a bus stop a seven-minute walk away offers alternatives. The nearest village of Radda in Chianti is an eight-minute drive (or 20-minute bus ride), and local restaurants here accompany wineries, which dot nearby villages. Historic castles are a short drive, and it's no more than 15 minutes by car for Panzano's hilltop town, and fortified village, Volpaia. The Antinori Winery is a half-hour drive, and it's twice that for the medieval city of Siena. Florence Airport is a one-hour drive.
Rooms
Spacious rooms with traditional charm and most with beautiful views
Elegant rooms are outfitted in a traditional affair that consists of terra-cotta or hardwood floors, wood-beam or exposed-brick ceilings, beige walls, and striking headboards with Renaissance-esque oil paintings. Modern amenities include flat-screen TVs, minibars, phones, desks, safes, and AC -- which management limits the use of to summers. Larger upgraded rooms add tea- and coffee-making facilities, and even more lavishly decorated Suites may come with original fireplaces, furnished terraces, or jetted tubs. Minibar offerings are also free in these rooms, and living areas in some are velour-draped. Pool, garden, and vineyard views are guaranteed in upgraded rooms, but entry-level Classics may overlook the parking lot. Smart bathrooms have gilded mirrors, walk-in showers, and vessel sinks, plus hairdryers, slippers, and robes. Six barn apartments have kitchenettes, plus living and dining areas. Fees apply for cribs. Room Wi-Fi is free, but it can be unreliable.
Features
Valley-view pool, terrace hosting wine tastings, free breakfast, and quality spa
Yellow loungers and white umbrellas surround the circular outdoor pool, which is seasonal and unheated, but its sunny spot overlooking green hills is great. A large terra-cotta terrace with wrought-iron furniture provides a sophisticated setting for daily wine tastings alongside finger food, and guests find prices reasonable. Stone walls form a sequestered courtyard here, and potted flowers add pops of color. Guests prefer this are to the simple, indoor bar. Although there's no full restaurant, the bar serves light meals like pastas, salads, and cheese platters, which can also be taken outside. Country murals around the breakfast buffet spread is charming, which is free, well-reviewed, and generally served outdoors. Cooked options accompany Tuscan and continental choices, plus tea, coffee, and juice. Constructed from former cellars, the spa is as character-rich as it is high-end. Arched ceilings overlook a big whirlpool tub, sauna, steam room, and an indoor/outdoor relaxation area with loungers that affords gorgeous vistas amid fragrant lavender. Massages and treatments are top-of-the-range here, but there's no gym. Excursions and wine tours can be arranged for a fee, and both parking and Wi-Fi are free.
