The mid-range Hotel Sovestro has two pools, a modern fitness center, a restaurant, and a bar with a scenic terrace looking out on the Tuscan countryside. This family-run hotel has 40 rooms and is a five-minute drive from the iconic San Gimignano and its world-famous medieval towers. Guests who are looking for a typical rustic Tuscan atmosphere may consider Sovestro a little bit too basic, and a bit too expensive for the area considering the abundance of inexpensive and charming farm stays in the region.
Scene
A mid-range hotel with lots of features a great Tuscany location, but when it comes to the decor, not a ton of Tuscan charm
The small lobby has cotto floors and a sufficiently harmonic mix of modern and antique furniture, including leather armchairs. The general feeling is homey but a bit plain, with pastel colors and art prints. From the lobby, a long hallway leads to the guest rooms. The 28 rooms on the ground floor have small gardens, and the ones on the second floor have terraces. The pool is just in front of the hotel, with sun umbrellas and lounge chairs on a cotto tile floor. A garden with aromatic plants and roses make the atmosphere pleasant. At the back of the hotel there's a smaller (and shallower) pool with a waterfall that resembles a little lake, surrounded by mediterranean plants.
Location
Close to the medieval San Gimignano
The hotel is a five-minute drive from San Gimignano. Guests who love walking will find a pedestrian path just behind the hotel leading to the medieval village. The walk takes around 40 minutes and is a good way to avoid the expensive and crowded parking lots in town. Major Tuscan cities such as Florence or Siena are less than one hour drive from the hotel.
Rooms
Clean, but a bit bland and dated
The rooms are clean and homey, with cotto tiles and soft colored walls. Bedspreads and drapes have floral prints (that look a bit dated), and on the walls are huge pictures of the Tuscan landscape taken by a local photographer. All rooms come with satellite television and free Wi-Fi. Ground-floor rooms have small gardens; those facing the back of the property are spared views of the busy road behind the hotel thanks to plants and trees, although some past guests have reported traffic noise. Upper-level rooms have terraces and those facing the pool feel less private. Bathrooms are simple but modern, with white ceramic tiles and walk-in showers. Those looking for rustic Tuscan charm won't find much of it here.
Features
The Tuscan restaurant and the modern fitness center
The hotel is next to the Da Pode restaurant, part of the same property, which serves typical Tuscan dishes in a warm rustic atmosphere with stone walls, cotto floors, and a veranda with wooden beams. The restaurant also has outdoor seating with views of the surrounding green hills. Similar views can be found on the hotel's bar terrace, where a typically Tuscan breakfast with cakes and savory items is served in the summertime (it's brought indoors in winter). Past guest recommend avoiding the automatic coffee machine; tastier cappuccinos can be ordered at the the bar. There’s also a decent-size fitness center with modern machines and some huge pictures of the hotel’s owner, Sergio, a rally driver.
