Bottom Line

An intimate, family-like atmosphere pervades this hotel and spa in the Tuscan countryside. The 25 rooms are laid out around well-kept grounds, and the conscientiously maintained outdoor pools are sourced from the hotel’s private spring, one of Saturnia’s famous naturally occurring thermal waters. The excellent restaurant serves local fare in a country-style dining room. Hotel Saturno Fonte Pura is a simpler but very comfortable alternative to the the palatial and more expensive Terme di Saturnia Spa & Golf Resort, a better known hot springs hotel that is located three kilometers away.

Scene

One of the smaller and newer thermal resorts dotting the tiny thermal spa town of Saturnia

Hotel Saturno Fonte Pura offers an intimate, welcoming atmosphere that makes it popular amongst international tourists, locals, families, and couples alike. The grounds combine elegant yet casual terraces and gardens with two large, modern concrete thermal pools maintained at body temperature, which allows for bathing year round. The complex of terracotta stucco buildings that make up the resort overlook Tuscany's rolling hills, and many rooms have views. Inside the hotel, the lobby has cozy white sofas, an oriental rug, and terracota tile floors, while a cozy reading room has Louis XVI-style chairs and a big wood-burning fireplace. While the hotel has a deal with a nearby golf course and there are a number of bucolic nearby attractions, many guests have reported finding the offerings of the hotel so complete they have no desire to leave the premises.

Location

In the southern Tuscan hills of Maremma, a short drive from Saturnia’s hot springs waterfalls

Set in the southern Tuscan hills in the tiny township of Saturnia (population 240), Hotel Saturno Fonte Pura is a few minutes’ drive from the Cascate del Mulino, the free outdoor, naturally occurring waterfalls deriving from one of the many thermal springs spread throughout the area. Restaurants and a few other resorts are scattered nearby Hotel Saturno Fonte Pura; the medieval township, including the church of Santa Maria Maddalena and the Roman gates dating to 2nd century B.C., are about 1km away from the hotel. Several historically important towns, including Pitigliano, Sovana and Sorano, are within a 30-minute drive.

Rooms

Clean rooms decorated in earth tones with tasteful country touches

Comfort Rooms are pretty but simple with stall showers, desktop TVs and minimal decor; as is frequently the case in Italian hotels, a queen bed may consist of two doubles beds pushed together. Superior Rooms are considerably larger and nicer with an adjacent living room, clay tiled floors and homey accents like wrought iron headboards and hand-painted wall murals. Smaller Standard Rooms have neither balconies nor views. All rooms include an air-conditioning unit.

Features

Two large, exceptionally clean thermal pools, a hot tub, and a full array of spa services

The two large thermal pools on the hotel’s grounds are the main attraction, and are maintained at their naturally occurring temperature of 37 degrees Celsius (98.6 degrees Fahrenheit). A hot tub and a full menu of spa services round out the options; many guests have claimed that, since the owner changes the pool waters daily, the facilities are the cleanest in town. Free Wi-Fi, poolside lounge chairs, and parasol are all included in the room price; a few mountain bikes are also made available for free to guests. The water for the two thermal pools and hot tub are sourced from the property’s private springs. Insects may be problematic poolside in certain seasons. The restaurant has arched brick ceilings, cheerful yellow and green tablecloths, and a small outdoor terrace facing the pool and countryside. The hearty Tuscan fare gets high marks from guests.
