Bottom Line

With a contemporary and arty style resulting from its 2008 renovation, some may think Hotel Miramare is beyond its three-star category. Located across from one of Italy's best beaches in the center of a small sea village, guests won't come across much English being spoken and can experience a real slice of Italian beach life. Some of the hotel's 23 contemporary rooms also have a small terrace overlooking the sea. With multiple meal options available as well, this is an ideal hotel for couples and families.

Scene

Relaxing vibe with a homey and contemporary style

From its front entrance, the three-story family-run Hotel Miramare is fairly unremarkable: a basic building with no real character features and a typical motel quality sign. However, thanks to a total renovation in 2008, the hotel's back entrance -- its sea-facing side -- is marked by a colorful landscape and a large, contemporary wood-covered terrace and glassed dining room. A mix of neutral colors, natural finished wood, tile floors, and lively artwork have this hotel teetering on the higher rung of its three-star designation. The owner, who is often found behind the front desk, has created a very hospitable and relaxing vibe in this borderline-boutique setting.

Location

Beachside location in the center of town

Centrally situated within a few minutes walk to the promenade and port, Hotel Miramare has one of the best locations in Castiglione Della Pescaia, with the property's direct access to one of Italy's finest beaches. This ancient, sleepy fishing port has beach weather for most of the year, making it ideal for a holiday focused on relaxing and quaint explorations. In addition to restaurants with tasty seafood and small bars, the town's biggest attraction is the medieval fortress that looks down over the village.

Rooms

Surprisingly stylish rooms with small balconies and views

Contemporary styled wood furniture, simple leather headboards, and tiled bathrooms make Hotel Miramare's 23 rooms surprisingly stylish -- down to the chic lighting fixtures and the wood-framed flat-screen TVs. Air-conditioning and private telephones are on hand as well, and the bathrooms come with a variety of toiletries. All rooms also come with a small private terrace. Twelve of the rooms are street-side and have views of the ancient fortress, while the others take in the hotel's private beach and the Tuscan archipelago.

Features

Restaurant, bar, and beach among features that stand out for mid-range hotel

Hotel Miramare's standout feature is its beautiful private beach. Easily accessible across a paved road, this flat, fine-sand beach is a repeated recipient of the Blue Flag eco-award for its sustainability, water quality, educational information, and safety. With more than enough loungers and umbrellas for beachgoers and a generous amount of space, guests never have to wake up early to reserve a chair or feel overcrowded. There are also bikes for rent.

Redesigned in the 2008 renovation, the hotel's casual, contemporary restaurant is spacious with huge windows to enjoy the view. There's also a modern bar with leather furniture and natural wood accents. The restaurant is open to the public and has an a la carte and daily specials menu, usually featuring seafood and a collection of local and national wines. In addition to a free breakfast with a continental selection, meals at the hotel are at half- or full-board. Just off from the restaurant is a large terrace area with a wooden roof where guests are served morning meals and can feel the sea breeze without worrying about the sun. Meeting facilities are available as well, as is free Wi-Fi. A hotel shuttle is provided to reach the free off-site parking lot.
