Some tiny showers
Hotel Marchionni was built in the 1920s and today it still reflects much of its original Art Deco style over four stories and 40 guest rooms accessible via a beautiful glass cage elevator. The location is another strong point; Marchionni is one block from the beach and one block from the city's enormous park. The rooms mimic the public area's Art Deco style, but the look may be too vintage for some tastes. Free continental breakfast is included in all rates, and there's a lobby bar for cocktails and wines. The hotel partners with a nearby beach club, allowing discounts for use of their pool and sun loungers. For an alternative with a pool and more modern rooms, check out Sina Astor Hotel -- but note that rates are higher.
Scene
Charming vintage Art Deco style
Hotel Marchionni was originally built in the 1920s, and the current style reflects much of its historical Art Deco grandeur. The show piece of the hotel is the cage style elevator with etched glass. There's also a lovely drawing room with antique furniture, a yellow sofa, Oriental rug, and crystal chandelier. Soft pink paint and white crown moldings makes the space pop. Everything at the hotel is beautifully maintained and the exterior looks quite contemporary. Guests are mostly tourists (many of them Italian) and there's a mix of families and couples. Overall, the hotel is quiet after breakfast when guests leave to explore the beach and park. Note that the hotel closes for three weeks every November.
Location
Sandwiched between the beach and the park
Hotel Marchionni has an ideal location right between the Viareggio beachfront promenade and the expansive city park. It's about a block to each locale in opposite directions. There are a handful of restaurants on this end of the beach, though it's about a 15-minute walk south along the beach for the main strip of restaurants, shops, gelato stands, and beach clubs. Viareggio is popular with Italian families who like the calm ocean and sand beach that's different than the rocks and crowds in the nearby (and much more popular) Cinque Terre. Lucca's medieval walls are about a 25-minute drive. It's about an hour's drive to Cinque Terre. Pisa International Airport is a 30-minute drive. It's about 80 minutes to Florence.
Rooms
An Art Deco look with a few modern amenities -- some furnished balconies
Guest rooms continue the public area's Art Deco theme, but the overall look tends to feel more dated in the rooms than it does in the lobby. There are three different room categories: Classic, Family, and Prestige. Classic Rooms are the smallest, while Family Rooms can sleep two adults and up to three kids. Style details include antique furniture, wood floors, upholstered headboards, and gauzy fabrics on the walls. Each room is stocked with a flat-screen TV, mini-fridge, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are generally spacious, though some of the rooms have tiny showers. Wall-mounted hairdryers and toiletries are provided. Rooms at the front of the hotel have furnished balconies and you can see the ocean down the block. Rooms at the back of the hotel have pleasant views of the neighborhood.
Features
Free continental breakfast, lobby bar, and free Wi-Fi
Feature at Marchionni are limited, since most guests spend their time at the beach. All rates include a continental breakfast spread that features Italian items like pastries, cold cuts, and cappuccino. There's a cute bar just off the lobby, and reception staff can mix a simple drink, open a beer, or pour a wine for guests to enjoy in the drawing room or their guest rooms. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. Metered parking is available on the street, or there's a paid garage. The hotel partners with Nueve Italia beach club for discounted use of their pool, sun loungers, and beach access.
