Simple property right on the sea
Direct access to a (pebbly) private beach
Beach doesn't get too crowded
Surrounded by green pine forest and Mediterranean scrub
Pool with beach view
Some structures and rooms look outdated
Can be expensive in peak season
This mid-range resort comprises 40 rooms scattered in a series of buildings in a green pine forest directly on the sea, on the southeastern part of Elba Island. It has a direct access to a private part of pebbly Margidore Beach, which doesn't get too crowded during the hot months. Its strong point is the location in a green area next to the water, with rooms close to the beach and pool (from a few steps to a five-minute walk). The structure and rooms look outdated, though.
Scene
A simple mid-range hotel set amid a pine forest on the sea
The property is surrounded by a pine forest. The central structure houses the lobby (with a front desk, and a library), a kids' room, and the restaurant with terrace. From this structure some paths lead to the rooms, set in a series of not-too-modern buildings at different distances from the sea. The hotel’s beach is made of pebbles and sand, but it doesn't get too crowded and is constantly awarded by Legambiente, the Italian League for the Environment, as one of Italy’s most beautiful beaches. In comparison, the nearby Lacona beach, one of the longest on the island, is always overcrowded in the summer.
Location
Right on the sea
Capo Sud Hotel is on the southeastern part of Elba Island. A stay here requires a car, since reaching the hotel with public transportation is not easy, and there's virtually nothing within walking distance. Some shops or restaurants can be found in the touristic hamlet of Lacona (a five-minute drive), but the closest village is Capoliveri, a 15-minute drive. It's more or less the same distance to get to the port in Portoferraio. Many returning guests appreciate the green Mediterranean scrub around the rooms and the location right on the sea.
Rooms
Simple rooms with sea or forest views
Rooms are divided in two categories: Blue Rooms have a sea view -- though sometimes only a partial one -- while Green Rooms have a view of the pine forest. Furniture is simple, often made of plywood or Formica, and looks a bit outdated. Renovated rooms have a slightly better but still plain furniture in modern color schemes. Bathrooms are basic as well but clean. Rooms have outdoor spaces, each with a couple of plastic or metal chairs and a table. As often happens in seaside properties that open only a few months a year, there can be some mustiness, especially during low-occupancy periods.
Features
A pool and two restaurants
The hotel has a pool with a bar, in a scenic position just above the beach. By the pool there’s a restaurant used for snacks and lunches during the peak season. The main restaurant is open at dinner, while breakfast is usually served on the outdoor terrace. The food gets mixed reviews. Half- or full-board rates are available: Guests choosing half-board rate can decide day by day if they want to have lunch or dinner. Hotel Capo Sud doesn’t have any entertainment activities or a kids' club, although there is a kids' playroom and a playground.
