Hotel Belmare is a small, family-run hotel in Patresi, a tiny hamlet of Marciana on the western coast of Elba Island -- probably the wildest and most rugged part of the isle. The hotel is what Italians would call a “pensione” -- a boarding house -- and both full- and half-board rates are offered. Much of the success of this hotel is due to the owner, who receives guests, helps them with luggage, suggests beaches or trekking itineraries, and serves them in the restaurant. Rooms are very clean and simple -- almost monastic -- but noisy and with no air-conditioning or fans. There are very few on-site amenities.
Scene
Small family-owned hotel
This 24-room hotel is overall dated and extremely simple, but the owners' hospitality is top-notch. There’s virtually no lobby; when you enter, the front desk is in front of you, followed by the stairs and a hallway -- and that’s it. On the ground floor, the restaurant and a garden terrace with a sea view are available for al fresco dining.
Location
Beaches, views, and trekking in the wildest part of Elba
Hotel Belmare is directly on the western coast of Elba, in the small hamlet of Patresi, about 50-minutes from Portoferraio port. The area is one of the wildest in the isle: cliffs and gorgeous views on Corsica or Capraia are what nature lovers look for here, together with beautiful beaches or trekking itineraries in the nearby mountains. Those looking for nightlife or shopping should consider hotels in other parts of Elba, such as Portoazzurro, Capoliveri, Portoferraio, or Marina di Campo. The hotel is basically a starting point to the beaches in the area. Some are within walking distance of the hotel, such as Patresi or Polveraia beaches (a 15-minute climb down), which others require a car, such Sant’Andrea (10-minutes) or Fetovaia (15-minutes).
Rooms
Clean and simple, but noisy
Rooms are small but clean: some have terrace or outdoor spaces, and many have sea views; others face the mountains out the back. Dated furniture is a little bit austere; cold neon lights only accentuate this. Flat-screen TVs are a modern touch. But the real problems are noise from the street and neighboring rooms -- and the lack of air-conditioning or fans. Bathrooms are tiny with stall showers and single sinks, but clean.
Features
Restaurant and ferry discounts
The restaurant offers breakfast (typically Italian-centric with cakes, croissants, bread, and jam, and only some cold cuts and cheese), lunch, and dinner -- with a couple of fixed menus for every meal with fish, meat, or vegetarian options. Half- or full-board rates are available: guests can decide every morning if they will eat at the hotel or not, depending on the menu. The simple restaurant has a big hall and an outdoor terrace, both with sea views that are lovely for watching the sunset. A ping pong table is set up outside. The hotel’s owner, Mr. Vincenzo, is an expert trekker and can suggest paths or trekking itineraries by the sea, or in the Elba mountains. Discount prices for ferries to and from Elba are included with the room rate.
