The hotel is set right by the pedestrian village of Bagno Vignoni, with its landmark medieval pool visited by Saint Catherine of Siena and Lorenzo the Magnificent. The village is about an hour southeast of Siena. It’s also 20 minutes to Montalcino, home to Brunello wine, and it’s a 30-minute drive to Montepulciano.

The hotel’s 36 large, air-conditioned rooms have a comfortable, classic look, with hardwood floors and simple fabrics and furniture. The bathrooms have either a bath or shower, and some have both, but they are a bit cramped. Decor is not particularly upscale (picture simple wooden furniture and sometimes two twin mattresses pushed together), but they're clean and have all the expected amenities. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, minibars, bathrobes, and slippers.

Along with its large outdoor swimming pool, fed by the thermal spring, there are indoor “water rooms,” which are lovely pools that are exclusively for hotel guests. There is a hydro-massage, a Finnish and bio-saline sauna, and a Turkish bath as part of the hotel spa as well, and guests can book treatments for an additional fee.The restaurant serves a buffet lunch and four-course dinner, and drinks are available in the bright lobby bar, il Barrino. There’s also a modern meeting room, but there is no fitness center.
