Castello Vicchiomaggio

Castello di Vicchiomaggio is situated in a restored stone castle built in the 15th century among the rolling hills of the gorgeous Tuscan countryside. It has a long history and has hosted such guests as Leonardo da Vinci and the poet Francesco Redi. The drive up the paved road to the castle is lovely and picturesque, with tall trees, vineyards, and countryside all around. Entrance to the castle is through a massive, arched wrought-iron gate, and the setting is magnificent, but mobility-challenged guests should note that there are many steps and stone walkways that could be difficult to navigate. Gardens surround the castle, and there are many places where guests can pause and take in the gorgeous scenery, perhaps with a glass of wine. 

A courtyard in the center of the hotel features columns and arches alongside lush potted flowers and greenery. Inside, there's a common area in the Canonica that's a relaxing for guests to hang out on loveseats or at the dining table with upholstered chairs. Free bottled water and instant coffee are available. Wine production still takes place on the property, and guests can tour the production area in the cellar. The overall feel of the property is romantic and relaxing, particularly appealing to couples and honeymooners. Because of the spacious rooms and suites, some families and groups also are drawn here. 

The castle is in the iconic Tuscan countryside, about a 10-minute drive from the village of Greve in the Chianti area, which is famed for its red wines. The area surrounding the hotel is green and cultivated, with vineyards in every direction. The paved road leading to the castle is easily accessible. Around the castle is a small hamlet with a church and the former house of the church (the Canonica), now converted into accommodations for the guests. The Tuscan capital city of Florence, and its airport, are about 45 minutes away by car or a little over an hour by bus. The picturesque 12th-century town of Siena and charming San Gimignano also are about a hour's drive away. Guests will most likely want to have a car as taxis are expensive and there's not much within walking distance. Parking on the property is free. 

The hotel's 15 rooms are split between the main castle and the Canonica, which is the house next to the church. Rooms in the main building are more rustic and Old World -- in fact, some of the couches and chairs look a bit outdated -- while suites in the Canonica retain a classic look, but are more modern. Rooms are all named for famous artists from the region. Accommodations are individually decorated, but they are all spacious and feature high ceilings -- some with exposed wood beams -- along with gorgeous antique furniture, and soothing neutral color schemes. Terra-cotta tile floors and white walls hung with art inspired by each room's name create a subtly elegant atmosphere. Views are of the courtyard or gorgeous countryside, and some rooms have private balconies that make the views even more enjoyable. 

Modern amenities include Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs; some rooms do not have air-conditioning. Kitchens are included in many of the suites, and they are fully equipped with everything needed for cooking and dining. An extra fee is charged for dish-washing services, however.  Higher-category rooms also have lovely seating areas next to stone fireplaces -- a particularly romantic extra. Bathrooms have been beautifully resorted in most rooms, with vintage fixtures such as pedestal or wall-mounted sinks and tile floors and walls. They have shower/tub combos or walk-in showers, and toiletries and towels are provided. 

The outdoor infinity pool is a highlight here, with sweeping views of the Tuscan countryside. Lounge chairs and umbrellas are available on the pool deck, and lush greenery and a stone wall provide a pleasant backdrop. Guests can start their day with a free breakfast buffet that includes a variety of items. The hotel's restaurant, Vicchiomaggio, serves Tuscan fare every day for lunch, but it is not open every night for dinner, as it frequently hosts tour groups making it unavailable for hotel guests. The restaurant setting is casual and charming, with a high arched ceiling, arched doorways, red tile floor, fireplace, and classic wooden tables and chairs. One night each week, guests are invited to a Tuscan Family Banquet that features a wine cellar tour, wine tastings, and a four-course Tuscan meal. Musicians play the baby grand piano and sing during the meal. The chefs also teach cooking classes so guests can learn to cook Tuscan cuisine. A small Catholic chapel on the property is popular for weddings, and the hotel hosts many receptions and dinners inside and out in the garden. Guests can buy wine produced on the property at a wine shop on the main road a few minutes' drive from the castle. Wi-Fi is free, as is parking.
