Lack of amenities besides the basics
The small, modest Albergo Il Porticciolo has the size of a bed and breakfast with aesthetics closer to that of a dormitory or hostel; it is a modestly priced option that is ideally located both for exploring the beach and the tiny Isola del Giglio, situated just off the coast of Tuscany in the Tyrrhenian sea. The seven rooms are small and basic, with a few charming, fun touches including curtains painted with cartoon figures. Guests have consistently commented that, despite the simplicity of the property and lack of amenities, it is perfectly situated for exploring the island and enjoying the beach, and the warmth of the owners is particularly notable.
Scene
A simple, family-run hotel
The biggest draw of this establishment is its location; it is a no-frills hotel just a few steps from the beach near Campese, on the west side of the island. Run by a local couple, it has a certain charm, despite the aesthetic of the lobby and hallways feeling slightly institutional, like a hostel or dorm. The building comprises two stories, and is set in a pedestrian area of town; any traffic nearby is local. Numerous guests have commented that the warmth of the owners makes up for any lack in visual atmosphere.
Location
Within walking distance of the beach and the port of Campese on the western side of Giglio
The property is located a few hundred meters from Campese Tower, which is located in the main town square of Campese, on the western side of Giglio. Ferries run from the Tuscan town of Porto St. Stefano, to the eastern side of the island on Port Giglio. The western side can be accessed by local public bus from Port Giglio (about 40 minutes); the bus runs just across the street from the hotel. For at least part of the summer, tourist cars are not allowed on the island unless by special petition.
Rooms
Seven rooms, individually and simply decorated
There are fun touches to the rooms here, including the occasional wall-mounted painting and light drapes on the windows with cartoon drawings on them. Apart from these details, there is minimal furniture, though several rooms are outfitted in a single bright color scheme that extends to the bedding and to the plastic, wall-mounted shelving units. Many guests have commented on the impeccable cleanliness of the rooms, all of which have air-conditioning.
Features
A simple dining hall, an outdoor patio, and modest garden
The hotel’s strong suit is its location; there is a restaurant on the ground floor where full or half board are both possible. Apart from this, there are a few areas to sit and lounge in the hotel, the most pleasant being a stone patio outside the hotel, which contains some café tables and chairs as well as a small handful of wicker armchairs.
