Bottom Line

Agriturismo Poggiacolle is a farm stay in the Tuscan countryside, not far from the iconic medieval village of San Gimignano, in the province of Siena. It's an actual working farm where organic wine and oil are produced. The architecture is typically rural, with structures made of stones and bricks surrounded by vineyards and olive trees. It has a pool with gorgeous views and an authentic atmosphere, but no restaurant and a simple room decor. Prices are typical of this kind of property, of which there are plenty in the area.

Scene

Gorgeous view of the medieval San Gimignano

Just outside San Gimignano, a dirt road lined by vineyards and olive trees leads to this farm. Poggiacolle is surrounded by the green Tuscan countryside and comprises a series of rural buildings. This farm B&B has five rooms in the farmhouse that share a rustic communal kitchen, and three apartments with independent access, each named after a flower. Just outside the farm but still on the grounds sits an infinity pool with gorgeous view of the countryside and the nearby towers of the medieval San Gimignano. There's also a former dovecote turret that's been transformed into reading corner with a view.

Location

In the Tuscan countryside, among vineyards and olive trees

Poggiacolle is less than a 10-minute drive from the medieval village of San Gimignano, in the Tuscan countryside on an unlit road that's not safe for walking on after sunset. The property is isolated but is easy to reach, although the last stretch of road is unpaved. Many use this farm stay as a base from which to visit Tuscany -- Siena and Florence are each less than an hour's drive from here.

Rooms

Plain, rustic rooms with private or shared kitchen access

The rooms in the main farmhouse open out onto a communal rustic kitchen that the guests can use to cook for themselves. This lends to a lack of privacy; those requiring more seclusion may prefer the apartments with independent access and private kitchenettes. Rooms are neither spacious nor soundproofed. Decor and furniture is a rustic Tuscan style with cotto tile floors and wooden beams. Beds have simple flower-patterned bedspreads; some have metal or carved wooden frames. Generally speaking, rooms are well kept and clean. Bathrooms are tiny but contemporary with light brown travertine tiles and relatively big showers. All the rooms have views of the countryside and a few have views of San Gimignano and its towers.

Features

Italian breakfast and free Wi-Fi and mountain bike use

Poggiacolle’s breakfast is served in a hall that looks a bit like a rustic school, with high beamed ceilings and maps on the walls. Breakfast is typically Italian, with cakes (some are homemade), bread, and jam as well as local ham and pecorino cheese. The farm produces and sells organic wines and oil. Mountain bikes can be borrowed free of charge. Wi-Fi is also free, but in some rooms the signal is weak, due to the thick stone walls.
