Bottom Line

A Point Porto Ercole Resort & Spa’s most notable draw is its elegant, futuristic decor, which is striking and fun. It may be best for those looking simply for a clean, beautiful room slightly outside of town, given that the spa, the hotel's service, and the restaurant have all received uneven reviews. Most feel that the 65-room property doesn't live up to its advertised five-star status. Because it offers parking, the hotel is well positioned as a jumping off point for those who have rented cars, which are essential to exploring the rest of the island.

Scene

A visually remarkable hotel on the outskirts of one of Monte Argentario’s two main towns

A Point Porto Ercole’s defining characteristic is its remarkable design, which includes recessed blue LEDs wending around undulating, starkly graphic architectural features and filling the hotel’s spacious lobby, spa, restaurant and 65 rooms with a futuristic glow. Rooms are notably clean and large. The spa, touted as a main attraction, is beautiful but small, fills quickly, and is minimally maintained; because the hotel is set apart from the town and the spa may be inaccessible during busy periods, a car to get to town and the activities of surrounding areas is highly recommended.

Location

On a country road a kilometer from Porto Ercole’s attractive port

The hotel is located on a country road on the outskirts of Porto Ercole, the southernmost of the two main towns on the peninsular island of Monte Argentario. The hotel sits one kilometer from the harbor and main drag of Porto Ercole, and is easily accessible from the SS1 Aurélia, about 20 minutes from the Orbetello exit in the Tuscan countryside. Parking -- a rarity inside the town itself -- is free in the hotel’s adjacent, unpaved lot. A car or bike are preferable for getting into Porto Ercole, though walking is possible (25 minutes).

Rooms

Clean, minimalist rooms with comfortable beds and design-oriented decor

The hotel’s signature blue LED lighting and striking design extends to large, well-maintained rooms with comfortable beds and modern furnishings. The fixtures may toe the line between comfort and functionality for some (square sinks, bidets, and toilets, for example). Most rooms have views of the surrounding countryside that range from pleasant to stunning. In many rooms, partially transparent bathroom walls allow guests to see one another in the lavatory or shower, causing privacy concerns for some. Free toiletries are minimal, as are snack bar offerings. In-room plasma screen TVs offer limited cable access.

Features

Small spa and limited gym facilities

The spa, touted as a main attraction, while beautiful, is also tiny, gets crowded quickly, and has suffered in the past from temperature and maintenance inconsistencies. Bathrobes are available on request for a fee; refreshments are not provided. The most obvious path to the spa is through an outdoor, internal courtyard. There is an unheated, seasonal outdoor pool and a small fitness center consisting of three exercise machines.
