Some room decor a bit dated
This upscale hotel is within the iconic building
that was the former Lingotto car factory. Renovated by renowned architect Renzo
Piano in 1995, there are now 240 stylish and spacious guest rooms, and
contemporary public spaces. It’s a fascinating property for anyone interested
in design and architecture, and there are plenty of facilities to draw guests
here too -- including a restaurant, bar, fitness center, sauna and steam room,
excellent business facilities, and an attractive garden. It’s pricier than the
Holiday Inn Turin Corso Francia, but is slightly closer to the city center, has
lots more facilities, and added panache.
Scene
Sleek and chic, with plenty to interest car enthusiasts
The industrial look of the building’s exterior
gives away its former use as a car factory. But on entering the lobby, the
modern refurbishment is immediately apparent. An expanse of white marble
flooring covers the huge space, and high ceilings and enormous floor-to-ceiling
windows ensure the area is filled with natural light. The building’s automotive
history is not forgotten though, and there are hints of it littered amongst the
sleek and modern Italian design. Fiat, Alfa Romeo, and Jeep merchandise is on
display in the lobby -- as is a vintage car. Old photographs and architectural
drawings of the building adorn the walls of the chic, taupe-colored restaurant.
Many couples and families stay here, but the hotel is especially popular with business
travelers, thanks to the on-site facilities and proximity to the Lingotto
Conference Center. Many guests are car enthusiasts too and are attracted by the
hotel’s history, as well as the nearby Automobile Museum.
Location
A short ride out of Turin’s center
The NH Torino Lingotto is in a quiet location
outside of the city center. It’s just a minutes’ walk to the Lingotto Metro
station though, and from there is a 10-minute subway ride into the center of
Turin. Just a 10-minute walk from the hotel though is the Automobile Museum,
where there’s an impressive collection of nearly 200 cars. A five-minute walk
away is the original Eataly, where there’s a high-end food court, a market, and
a large grocery store. The hotel also has direct access to a large shopping mall,
a cinema complex, and a conference center. Turin Airport is around 35 minutes
by car.
Rooms
Modern, spacious, and trendy
The guest rooms are all large with enormous windows
and high ceilings. Each one has air-conditioning, a hairdryer, desk, safe,
minibar, flat-screen TV with satellite channels, pillow menus, and a free
newspaper. A quarter of rooms face the Alps, while others look out onto the hotel’s
attractive garden. Families are well catered for, as connecting rooms, cribs,
and infant beds can all be arranged, as can babysitting services. There’s a Junior
Family Suite available too, which comes equipped with toys, tea- and
coffee-making facilities, and free late checkout. The decor of the rooms is
simple and stylish, with plain gray walls, floors, and furniture. Some rooms haven't been updated. There's the
odd piece of trendy Italian furniture thrown in too, like a glass table or
funky leather armchair. And, of course, a vintage-style poster of a car.
Bathrooms are spacious and stylish, with cream marble tiling and white
fixtures.
Features
Plenty of facilities, plus a piece of automotive history
The hotel’s Torpedo restaurant overlooks the garden
with its range of tropical plants, and serves contemporary Italian dishes at
lunch and dinner. For breakfast, there’s a wide range of continental, American,
and gluten-free options available -- included in the room rate. The Turtle bar is a chic and elegant space which
serves a range of alcoholic drinks and leads onto the garden. The fitness center
is not within the property but guests can access a spacious and
well equipped private gym, seven days a week, through an internal corridor. There’s
also a sauna and steam room, free valet parking, a 24-hour business center and 15
meeting rooms, and a library. Wi-Fi is available, but there’s an hourly fee to
use it.What sets this hotel apart though is the access
that guests have to the building’s history. A free visit to the private art
collection of Fiat founder Giovanni Agnelli is on offer to all guests, as is
the chance to visit the unique rooftop car testing track made famous in the
movie The Italian Job.
