Centara Koh Chang Tropicana Resort

Part of the Centara Hotels and Resorts chain, this is a well-established option on Koh Chang that was most recently expanded in 2009. The style is undeniably Thai, leaning more toward a modern look than the classically ornate properties that otherwise dot the island's coast. Even so, things are looking just a bit tired in many of the common areas and rooms. Despite that fact, the sprawling tropical grounds do make this a pretty, relaxed, and convincingly Thai escape. And given its size and number of facilities, there's enough space to have a romantic getaway of quality family time -- or both. There are a number of places to unwind, from beachside bars and lounges to the multiple pools and even a tranquil spa. Expect to see a wide cross section of travelers here, both domestic and international. 

Located on South Klong Prao Beach, the Centara is just a seven-minute walk from a small town center that has bars and eateries. Travelers wanting to visit other parts of the island can catch a local pick-up taxi, which takes visitors around local areas, such as Lonely Beach. From Bangkok, there are daily flights to Trat Airport on the mainland -- taking around one hour -- and from there travelers can get a taxi to the ferry terminal. Driving from Bangkok to the ferry terminal will take nearly four hours, and once on the island it's a farther 30 minutes by car. 

The 156 units at the Centara Tropicana are a mix of rooms, suites, and cabanas that are plain and done in a modern, if slightly tired, Thai style. Expect to see lots of wooden details, from the beams overhead to the polished hardwood floors below. In fact, the abundance of wood does tend to make the rooms a bit dark. Walls, drapes, lamp shades, and linens all come in neutral shades and there's just a hint of color in a few throws. Some rooms feature pagoda-like flourishes while others are tricked out in ocean-inspired accents. All units include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, minibars, free bottled water, tea- and coffee-making facilities, and private terraces or patios. Higher category units, such as cabanas, are set away from the main hotel -- putting them far from its amenities -- though they include separate seating areas and larger flat-screen TVs. Rooms tend to stay quiet.

The Centara offers a wide range of amenities, all of which are handy for a beach getaway. Of course, that starts with the beach, where the resort sets up lounge chairs and offers beachside services. If that's not enough water-based relaxation, there are two outdoor pools --  the main one has a water slide, but it lacks much poolside seating. The beach pool, on the other hand, has a large patio with loungers, ocean views, and direct beach access. There are two bars -- including one poolside -- plus a restaurant serving local Thai fare and Italian cuisine. Note that buffet breakfasts aren't included in the nightly rates. The quiet Cenvaree spa offers a range of treatments, as well as a sauna and whirlpool, and there's a hair and beauty salon for some extra pampering. For younger guests, the Centara has a free children's club, a pool, and a large playground. Hiking and cycling trails are conveniently located close by and guests can kayak or take free beach yoga classes. There's also a fitness center, though most of the equipment is for a cardio workout. Guests can park at the resort free of charge and without prior reservation. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property.
